Liz's Bloglet

So here's my problem. I like my research topic. A lot. And so each time I find a new article even tangentially related to my topic I end up looking it up and reading it. Which doesn't aid in the whole actually finishing my proposal thing. _

Placebos are better than Prozac. Placebos repeatedly have done just as well as (or better than) anti-depressants in studies done by the drug companies themselves. People on sugar pills also seem to undergo similar brain changes as people on Prozac. I think, and the article says this, too, that the effects are helped considerably by the clinical attention the people received (which of course are not necessarily received by those who by the Prozac online). The moral of the story is that psychology, i.e. actually talking to those being treated, is still absolutely necessary in treating depression. Happy Mother's Day, a few days early, Mom. _

So a judge has ruled that we can't imprison people just because they look vaguely like they might possibly be from the Middle East or Afghanistan or somewhere like that and they might know something about September 11 or some other terrorism or something like that. I heard you sing a rebel song,
Sung it loud and all alone.
We can't afford the things you save,
We can't afford the warranty.
I see you walking in the glare
Down the county road we share.
Our southern blood, my heresy,
Damn that ol' confedaracy.
It took a long time to
Become the thing I am to you.
And you won't tear it apart
Without a fight, without a heart.

I'm sorry for what you have learned,
When you feel the tables turn.
To run so hard in your race,
Now you find who set the pace.
The landed aristocracy
Exploiting all your enmity.
All your daddies fought in vain
Leave you with the mark of Cain.
It took a long time to become you.

The center holds, so they say,
It never held too well for me.
I won't stop short for common ground
That villifies the trodden ground.
The center held the bonded slave
For the sake of industry.
The center held the bloody hand
Of the executioner man.
It took a long time to become you. _

For those completely out of the loop, the House had voted months ago to drill in ANWR per the desires of the vice president and other rich white men. On Tuesday, the Senate voted not to drill.
In case you were wondering, as I was, about how the 54/46 vote to close ANWR to drilling went down.

Five Democrats voted in favor of drilling and in favor of invoking
cloture, including Sens. John Breaux (LA), Mary Landrieu (LA), Zell Miller
(GA), Daniel Akakaand Daniel Inouye (both from HI).

Eight Republicans voted against the amendment, including Sens. Olympia
Snowe and Susan Collins (ME), Peter Fitzgerald (IL), John McCain (AZ),
Bob Smith (NH), Gordon Smith (OR), Lincoln Chafee (RI), and Mike DeWine
(OH).

Independent Sen. Jim Jeffords (VT) also voted no.

I just registered to vote here in GA. Guess who I was already planning to vote against. _

"By sometime this weekend (and it may have happened already) the
entire White Hawk wolf pack of central Idaho's Boulder-White Cloud
Mountains will be dead.
Nine wolves including the pregnant alpha female who is the famous
white wolf will be gunned down from a government helicopter.
Two were killed last week, three yesterday, and the rest right now,
or certainly by the end of tomorrow, because they all have radio
collars and are easily located from the air.
All this death because one sheep and two calves have been killed.
To put this into an understandable and very American context, the
cost to kill the wolves will be around $13,500; the value of the dead
livestock is less than $300. (for which the ranchers, Eddie, Jr.,
Dick and Betty Baker will be reimbursed)."

While in the Biosciences computer lab today I was browsing their webpage and came upon a very nice explanation of evolutionary theory written by a professor who develops high school biology curricula to a student who was challenging his textbook. It outlines the common errors in thinking by "creationists", elucidates the idea of scientific theory, and is just generally well written. _

There is a group of anti-abortion protesters on campus today. Their signs read "Abortion is Genocide". I think they need a dictionary and a history lesson. Women of all cultures are having abortions (when they are allowed to). No one culture is being singled out. Fundamental to the idea of genocide is that a people is destroyed: their culture, religion, and language. A fetus or embryo knows nothing about any of those things. I think the equating of the two is sloppy and inflammatory and I think victims and survivors of genocide victims throughout the world are being shown a great disrespect. As are all women. _
