A number of people have been playing NationStates, and it has occured to me that an actual International Relations game played with Johnnies and attendant folk would be a lot of fun. So I got together with Mr. Gillen, and we are working on creating just such a creature. It's called Islands and in the game you will control, well, an island of your own design. The game will be played via e-mail, and the turns will be once a month. Each turn will be equal to a year in game time. If this sounds like something that you might enjoy, the initial island creation guidelines can be found here. I'm looking forward to this game quite a bit, see you there! _

Yay! New blur album. I'm curious what the band is like without Coxon. However his guitar work was certainly overshadowed by the massive sound producer William Orbit gave 13, so it may not be noticeable (this is me being naively hopeful). _

Everyone knows TV dinners are bad for you, right? This is true, but Swanson's new breakfast takes it to a level which previously could only be achieved by eating entire alternate universes made only of prosciutto.

Ah, X-Entertainment, how I missed you. _

A review of the 1974 release of D&D in a wargaming magazine. I find it interesting that a lot of the blinders that this particular wargamer has are similar to ones that are hurled at modern RPG's that try to do something new (the comment about the art/content price ratio was lifted pretty much verbatim in a critique of Nobilis, which, I will repeat, is among the most beautiful books I own) _

So during break today at work I took some Post-It notes with me and drew all these silly singe-panel Ninja advertisements. They were all normal household and office items with NINJA tacked on the front.

NINJA Flashlight: Like a Normal Flashlight, with a NINJA!
NINJA Frying Pan: Perfect for Dinner Parties and impromptu Assasinations!
NINJA Keychain: Locked Out of Your Car? Grab Someone Else's!
NINJA Pencil: Lead Poisoning on the Cheap!

Sometimes the stupid ideas come at a dribble, sometimes they pour out. _

Spent the evening repairing and defragging the ol' harddrive in preparation for a bevvy of new software. Most exciting is Photoshop 6, which is super-tasty. Yay! I'm only one revision behind, now! PS6 has great text support, a new contextual tool bar which has all the right options, and far, far better integration with Image Ready. I'm sure as I use PS6 it will unfold like a subtle flower, allowing me further and further into its well-designed depths. Anyway, HotB (Moss! I Hunger For Commentary!) will be the test-run for both PS6 and the newly-acquired InDesign, just because I want to see how far the crazed integration goes, and I want to play with my new toys.

Oh, and thanks, Dad. _

We went to Five Star for their excellent Sunday brunch, and on the walk there, there's this big 4 story parking garage, and the facade is steel mesh with very large, square holes. The garage was empty, and the wind was blowing sort of along the front of it. The effect was an extremely loud, sustained whine, like a giant coke bottle, complete with occasional overtones. Truly strange. _

At Five Star, I asked what was in the fruit salad, and the girl at the cash register said, "Lots and lots of seeds!" Then she and Liz engaged in a prolonged bout of cruel laughing. It's nice to know that both my gastroentorogical problems and I have become regulars at that place. _

Does the government realize that if people actually did manage to seal themselves inside a room before getting blitzed by a gas attack they'd probably run out of air before they ran out of food?

I can see the newsreports, Geraldo-style, opening up thousands and thousands of little air-tight rooms with the people inside dead from carbon monoxide poisoning. A far higher death total than if they had just stood around on the street, statisticians will say. _

I read the final paragraphs of Invisible Cities and I was reminded of the feeling of hopelessness that Neil, and I, and I'm sure others, have felt recently. In the face of possibly endless war, the erosion of our rights, the new rise of fashionable hatred, and the degradation of our humanity to little more than couch potatoes with wallets, the passage I linked above gave me perspective and hope. _
