Remi's Bloglet

Mike Doughty (formerly just M.) was the frontman of one of my favorite bands, Soul Coughing. The Cough broke up a while ago, but Mike has continued on. He now does solo acoustic 'small rock' shows that, if you can catch one, are really phenomenal. His website, Super Special Questions, is more of a message board for Soul Coughing and Doughty fans, but there are some links to his solo offerings. _

The SPX was a blast! I'm sad that I did not see (or they were not there to be seen) either Mirabai or Martin, but I did meet a gaggle of cool people and chatted with them. A full report when I actually arrive home. _

I've put up a PDF Flyer for Too Fat that people who want to help out with promoting the comic can print out and leave at coffee shops, comic stores, and whatnot. It's a little jaggy, but I'm happy with it. I hope to hand this out at the SPX (I think I might be able to squeeze it in). _

Why fashion artists should never, ever do comics. The horror, the horror. I thought that the playing-to-the-fan-boy-spherical-boobies were the worst that comics could possibly offer, but no, terribly designed, ugly, exploitative covers can come from women, too, apparently. _

I've really been enjoying James Kochalka's Sketchbook Diaries, which are slice-of-life daily comics that are far different from his slightly less edgy than his Fancy Froglin or Magic Boy stuff, but are full of heart and humor. This week he seems to be doing stuff about his rock band, which always has support. _

Ancient Messages, a modern fantasy adventure I've been following since relatively close to its inception, is ending August 26th. I'm sorry to see it go, but at least it's a definitive thing. I hope Katherine Nelson will continue to do graphic storytelling in the future, her fertile imagination would be a loss to comics. _

Friday Five ('cause I'm self-indulgent that way):
1. Unemployed. No. Because I can't get a job.
2. Cartoonist/comic artist
3. Ma's a writer/social worker, dad's a graphic designer (or, at least, was during the vast part of my childhood). Yeah, I suppose that's influenced me.
4. Sort of?
5. Not having a job is hard, so I can't imagine a job that's easy, at least, if you're doing it right. Maybe some sort of think-tank work is easy if all you have to do is comment on reading the daily paper and commenting on it from whatever arena you've chosen. _

It's looking like a longshot that I'll get one of the Production jobs at UGA, which is frustrating, especially since the classifieds are almost solid scams and driving-related jobs. Luckily, I beat the beginnings of the funk that was dawning on me by working through the evening. I really love the drawing table. It makes drawing much more comfortable, and I have space to flail my arms about in, and if I want to take a break, I can swivel around in my chair and watch TV for a few minutes, eventually drifting back to work. I can work for three or four hours with the occasional break and not come out the other end with a sore neck or legs (which I'd get from propping up a drawing board while sitting on the couch). _

Finally! I got the Nobilis Character Guide done, weighing in at a decent 14 pages. Anyone interested in the game should download this PDF and read it. It's printable if you have a problem with reading that much stuff on a screen. I apologize profusely for any bad grammar/spelling, I really was going for speed over polish. Would meeting at 6:30 this Thursday for character creation be okay for people? For folks (Martin and Chris particularly) that have a problem with meeting around 6:30 on a weekday, I'd be happy to run an occasional weekend game in the evenings (like, once or twice a month, but it would run longer than a normal weekday game). Anyway,
download it off this link. Feel free to e-mail me with questions, or post them in the comments here. _

While collecting jars of mud and bugs with Liz today I got stung or something while crawling through a bush. My arm suddenly felt as if it were on fire in a band that radiated out from a point on the underarm near my elbow. Whatever it was immediately began to get puffy and inflamed, visibly raising my skin in puffy bubbles. After ten minutes, the burning had gone, but it itched a little. Now it's not even puffy. I'm thinking it was some sort of alien. _
