Went out to Raleigh to visit Mike and Debbie, a good time was had. Much food and much conversation. Watched a little of the Matrix, met up with Heidi Jacot again and saw her Romeo and Juliet production, which was excellent. Stripped the play down very much to its tragic love aspects, removing Rosalind entirely as well as much of the family-based intrigue. As a result, the moments of violence were very effective and the play moved along briskly, giving one a sense of danger and speed. I had only seen it on stage two other times, but this topped both of those easily. It wasn't definitive, but it brough life back to a beaten horse. _

Saw State and Main this evening. A very cute, if somewhat slight, film about Hollywood colliding with small-town life. Mamet's dialog, as always, shines.

Also read a few strips of The Norm and was impressed. A nice slice-of-life strip. Apparently it's actually syndicated, and it sort of has that feel. But the two months of strips I read are clever and made me laugh but still had a slightly bittersweet edge. If you want to read more the E-library is available for perusal. The graphic presentation of some of the sunday strips alone (and the E-Library) are worth the trip. _

Well, now we're at Liz's parents house. Yesterday was pretty busy and I was utterly tired by the time I had finished looking at the philosophy and religion/theology tests at the recording center and then shopping for holiday presents (apologies to Andrew, Mbai, and Michael for pooping out of the game early). Anyway, it's very techno-heavy upstairs here. Had my first taste of they very niiiice OSX on Mr. Sudduth's G4/800 with flatscreen display. Looking forward to this two weeks very, very much. _

Relive your life! Or at least a cheekily described life in the style of one of those extremely long personality tests. Make friends! Learn to walk! Become and office drone! Bizarrely endearing, in it's own deterministic way. _

Liz pointed it out, but it's too good to let die in the anonymity of our living room:
Tom Cruise's character in Magnolia, Frank Mackey, espouses the same philosophy as Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt's character in Fight Club). The difference is that Mackey is a horrible person, as opposed to Tyler Durden's sympathetic pseudo-sainthood. It's not just the misogynism, which is more pronounced in Magnolia, but definitely present in Fight Club, that changes the portrayal. Is it simply the 'worlds' the characters inhabit? _

Just got my first haircut since Derek gave me one two and a half years ago, at the end of my junior year. It's kind of funky, and would look exactly the same as Liz's new 'do if I didn't slick it back with small amounts of gunk. It's not too bad, the gunk, it smells reasonably like apples and it keeps the hair out my eyes.

Learned about how the Democrats have a larger proportion of 'strong' Democrats than Republicans, but that they're more likely to defect to other parties. I enjoy being exposed to so many different things at RFB&D, it makes my base of general knowledge much larger, and I am finding things that I'm more interested in pursuing, intellectually. _

I saw the Dismemberment Plan last night. Their opening bands weren't as good as when I saw them in Austin, and Travis, their singer, was sick, but DAMN what a great band. They play with every fiber of their being, and then they play some more! They didn't play 'Ice of Boston' or 'You are Invited', but then, the crowd was made up of Indie Elite types, so their requests were bizarro songs I had never heard. But it was all good. The floor in the 40 Watt is incredibly hard, and my lower back was feeling the pain after dancing for a while, so now I feel old. As Liz pointed out, there were many, many chunky glasses. But the people didn't look cool, or even uncool, they looked like most of our parents in high school. So sad.

I want to see Enon (who opened for the Plan in Austin) again. _

I just saw Oceans 11, and it rocked. No particularly overdone special effects, just a bunch of big-name actors bouncing off each other. Sure, it feels a bit like 'Out of Sight', but it doesn't have Jennifer Lopez in it, and it's not as bloody. Which, in this case, is a good thing. It does have a wonderful sense of pacing (remember that? When was the last time you saw an action-adventure movie that had crests and valleys, and both felt right?) and it's got fun characters. Man, it's just good, clean fun. Who'dathunkit? _

And a victory for the good guys! Chris Ware takes home a major British book award for Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Boy on Earth. I have to wonder whether this a step toward prominence for the more literary comics out there, or just another aberration a la Maus. Still, it's a good day to be a cartoonist. _

I had totally missed the earlier hype on Ginger or Segway as it is now known. I am even familiar with Dean Kamen (that's real his name! He didn't come from another world, or just pull it out of thin air!), because he created the thing that destroyed my social life in high school, among other, vastly more important to some people but not to me, things. But beyond all that, it looks like a pretty neat gadget, and I kind of want one. _

Andrew commented on Odd Jobs and I have to say that it's one of the best serial comics I read. Sluggy Freelance has become a little dull in it's fan-fueled 'old age', and Ancient Messages might be too anime 'mystic' tinged for some, but Odd Jobs comes through, especially now that it's updating three times a week. Go read the first story! Stewart, of Too Fat fame, makes a guest appearance in the middle. I also have a piece on the Odd Jobs fanart page that I did with Russ of Ko Fight Club when I was staying at his house in Austin. And Andrew, I took no offense at your 'wish webcomics could be like this' comment, I'm jealous of Odd Jobs, too.

As for my comic, a new one will be up Friday, and every Friday from here on out, all things being equal. _
