Tori's Bloglet

I wonder how they'd react if I handed in my precept thing with only two precepts written down instead of one. _

A large part, I have decided, to liking Lobochevski is that I can understand geometry and logic and all the stuff he's using, at least so far. I was so utterly completely lost throughout most of last year in math, that since I'm currently in a position where I understand what's going on is just making me completely happy. _

I have decided that, at least for now, I like Lobochecski. Not that I can spell his name. _

The precept I'm most interested in is the one on Livy Ab urbe condita Books 1-10. (I have this thought that there are like 50 books, but I have no idea.) It's Mr. Ludwig, whom I know nothing about, but I love Livy. Mr. Schulman is doing the complete plays of Euripides, and with the except of the Bacchae, which I didn't like before that damn performance and Margaretta's Korean line dance and all the other horrible stuff that made me dislike it all the more, I love Euripdes. Mr. Barbera is doing a handful of things by Virginia Woolf, and that has me vaguely curious, cause I've never read Virginia Woolf, I hear she is good, and because I get these occasoinal feminist thoughts, where I want to read a woman. But there is also the Tori is a Classics person at heart, and has been for a very long time, and so Ms. Woolf might not be the best way to go. Like Cassie, I am asking for suggestions for older wiser people who have had all these tutors. (I have had Mr. Barbera, but it was for a lab that met at 9 AM, so ...) _

Every once in a while, I am reminded that I translated too much Cicero when I was 15, and I developed all sorts of bad habits that were only compounded by the lack of finite verbs in Book II of The Aeniad which we did the next semester. I almost told my French class this the other day, cause I had no problems with sort of ignoring a but, and I have this horrid tendancy to completely ignore small words. _

I just went through my mom's emails, not reading anything but the subject, cause I thought she had an email from Lyndsay's mother that had Lyndsay's phone number in it. Was that a bad thing? Over the summer, my mom would regularly ask us kids to check and make sure she had no emails. _

Have you ever suddenly realized that your best friend's birthday was two days ago, and you didn't do a thing, even call her or send her an email or anything? _

I oughtn't to find it terribly frightening: I've known what I want to do for something like ten years now, I want to study Greek and Latin literature, possibly in their own languages, or else terribly good translations, and I'd like most of all to go to Oxford or Cambridge or Edinburgh, cause they're in England and Scotland and have been around for ages, but I'd also be happy going to Cornell or Stanford, where I could have a dog, even if I don't stay on in Ithaca or California, and I don't need to worry about weight when I pack, or getting a computer and printer that have different power thingies. But I'm still scared of it. _

I have an appointment to talk to Roberta Gable in the Placement Office about graduate school on Friday afternoon. I'm finding this ridiculously frightening. _

I looked for Hiram after seminar, to ask him who was a real person in War and Peace, cause he was around after seminar on Thursday. But he wasn't there, and it made sense, cause he doens't go here anymore, but it made me sad. _

My mom saw Jane Goodall speak, possibly today, possibly yesterday, I don't know when the conference started, or how huge the time difference is exactly. I think that's very cool. _

And I don't know where they put my fridge. Nancy the Febbie who borrowed it for the summer said they weren't allowed to store fridges in the Campbell Common Room, cause they recarpeted, and it certainly isn't there, but she doesn't know where the put it. And neither did security when I asked them, or switchboard, although she told me to ask Andrew Ranson, who isn't in till tomorrow morning. _

It's odd. In all my other dorms, I could hear the bells ring, but I can't hear them ring in Chase. Dammit. Those bells were my backup alarm clock; if I messed up setting my alarm the night before, I could still make it to nine o'clock classes. And they let me know when it was time to go to class, even if I was already awake. _

Yesterday afternoon, Christina and I wondered down to the new bookstore that has replaced the Gap or some other such store. Their book selection seems to be extraordinarly small, but the cafe section was nice enough, and they have computers hooked up to the internet that you are free to use. _

There was a quote once, that I added into my list of away messages, that I titled "war and peace" cause I thought that was a cute title. And so as I go off to seminar, I'm putting it up. _

And, they seem to have finally decided to be nice to me, and I have no hell day. (All right, I had no hell day my freshman year, either.) And I only have a nine o'clock class one day a week, for my long lab. It makes me so happy! _

I like my new room in Chase. It's prettier than any of my old rooms. And bigger. And I like that the shower head has a pulse setting on it, cause those are always almost like having the hairdresser wash your hair before they cut it. _
