I have 4 cream eggs.  All must be eaten outside.  The 1st cannot be eaten until the temperature hits 50, the second 55, the third 60, and the 4th 65, at which point it will be Spring. _

I've been meaning to say, last week I retrieved the hat and gloves that I'd left on a bus, they had them in the booth at Alewife.  Also, a bus driver noticed me running forlornly towards mass ave as the bus shot past the bus stop, and stopped for me about 100 feet further on and waited.  So all you MBTA haters are taking an overly simplistic view of things.

I once worked out what I wanted my superpower to be.  It was something really trivial seeming and neat, sort of the opposite of wanting to be able to turn invisible, and I remember exactly where I was at the time, and what sort of day it was.  I don't remember what it was.  It bothers me regularly.  _

I don't have any firm footing here, any categorical principles, and probably no consistency, but this kind of assassination makes me feel ill.  It's too damned romantic, I think is the problem.  There are certainly arguments that it's better than missile strikes.   It's the secrecy more than the actual murder.  It's the total lack of transparency or accountability.  Calling it state-sponsored international terrorism is a sort of pedantry: true but also evading the question by swinging a loaded term.   But there simply must be a better way to do this.  It seems crazy to say that at least unmanned drones don't have fake passports and an official policy of ambiguity, but it does matter.  Maybe I'm working my way towards a principle after all: that when a government takes life, it has to do so openly.  The world doesn't need more paranoia. _

There were ~70 geese outside my cubicle window this morning.  They have since flown.  This is my subtle way of gloating about the fact that I now have a cubicle with a window.  Posting photos would have been more subtle, but I forgot my camera.  Of course, I can do both.  It's astonishing the effect that daylight has on my morale.   _

It isn't that the last act of Huckleberry Finn is bad, or shoddy, or somehow a different work.  It's that it's utterly depressing and misanthropic.  It's that the thing that makes Huck so wonderful, his humility, also makes him utterly unable to handle Tom, unable to believe in himself, and that Tom is no better than the Duke and the Dauphin.  It's a picture of civilization as layer upon layer of humbug conducted by morally bankrupt egomaniacs.  It isn't that Huck is decent and a pushover.  It's that his decency and his pushoverability are one and the same.

My worldview really isn't able to make any sense of the antebellum south, that there were so few white southern abolitionists.  The terrifying thing about slavery, and tyranny in general, is it's stability.  I should probably work on this.  Reading the work of northern abolitionists hasn't got me very far, in really understanding why it worked or how people thought about it.  I should probably start reading things by 19th century southerners, slaves and free.  Recommendations, positive and negative, welcome.  Wikipedia seems to be steering me towards Douglass and Simms.    _

The political grandstanding around Anthem right now makes me very glad I no longer work for an insurer.  I suppose it's possible they just decided to randomly loot, but it's miles more likely that they've got the data to justify the hike, and it really is an adverse selection death spiral.  Yelling at Anthem doesn't change the fact that what they're selling is insurance.  By definition, insurance is going to be a bad deal on average, for exactly the same reason that betting on horses isn't a good way to make money.  It's equivalent to complaining to the bookie that the odds are too short on a horse you know is almost certain to win.  The way things are set up right now, selling individual health insurance is like making book on a game rigged by someone else.  While it's true that very few saints are bookies, this doesn't mean a saint would be offering better odds. _
