Can the republican party hold together well enough to find a new leader after 2001? Does it even make sense anymore? Or will the war split the libertarians from the nationalists permanently? Are there even enough libertarians to matter (or, if you prefer, small government conservatives)? Is bloggy libertarianism sincere, or just a sort of macho posturing from the deeply insecure who will flock around a Strong Leader, preferably with a deep voice? Has Andrew Sullivan poisoned my mind with an idea of a Burkean conservatism that never existed in this country? The apparent rush of would-be defenders of freedom against government encroachment to creating a police state just confuses me. Bush was a totem they could use to avoid this internal conflict, but he never would have won a primary in 2004 if he weren't already president, if that makes sense. I'm confused. What are the natural political groupings now, anyway? And how do they fit into the parties? Gah. My thoughts are scattered and incoherent. _

Watching the republican debate on Fox. They're introducing the candidates, and there is a text box off to the side, listing age, religion, family (number of sons and daughters) and career, in that order. I'm fairly shocked that religion is on there, and sex mix of the off-spring. I know it's fox and South Corolina, but gosh. The set is straight game show. _

Bloomberg/Hagel in '08, as independents? What I know of Bloomberg is positive, apart from the whole media baron buying the presidency aspect. Tactically it's almost certainly good for democrats if he runs. And it would give me somewhere to vote in case of a Clinton/Guiliani race, though I still can't quite bring myself to believe that could happen. _

I caught fish

I love this camera. This was taken about 15 minutes ago. First fish sighting of spring. No filter, 5x optical zoom handheld, ISO 800. That's a reflection of a stick, not the thing in itself. I was entirely unaware of the second fish until I got it in photoshop.

I want a fishing camera. A normal fishing rod, but with a waterproof camera on the end, with the viewscreen and controls on the pole. I see a whole new sport developing. But maybe I've been playing too much Pokemon. _

As requested, a short video of the musical instrument. Probably requires a fairly modern version of Windows Media Player.

full-size
After what I did to that poor plover, I should say that this is totally legit, honestly acquired blur. Also, she was wearing glasses, and not pondering eternal questions, as far as I could tell. It's got a number because there a pile of ther things I want to try with this exposure and it's immediate sibling. My photographic pretentiousness seems to be reviving. I wonder if it's seasonal, like allergies. Exposures, I ask you. _

Slate has put together an animated version of Guiliani's little weasel speech, which should be heard. _

I'm sorry, Senator Obama, but I don't want to ring doorbells in New Hampshire. However, as a comprimise, I will wear a Obama T-shirt or, it if it's too cold, an Obama lapel pin while hiking in NH. This may not seem like much, but I have never purchased a t-shirt with any sort of printed message on it before. We do what we can.

Also, Obama links: a New Yorker profile his foriegn policy address

Also, I'm more than happy to try to discuss any doubts anyone may have about him. See! I'm campaigning! _

I'm trying to buy teaspoons on ebay. It's rather exasperating. Looking at much time I'm spending, and how close I am to paying retail, I should probably just give up. There are too many people making a living on Ebay now, too many people keeping the market honest, even in obscure corners like paul revere teaspoons. _

The good thing about the mist was that it was streaming across the sand. Crane Beach. _
