Derzu Uzala is indeed a beautiful film. Trying to think of other Geography films, where the main appeal of the film is people travelling through an alien landscape. Lawrence of Arabia and Lord of the Rings are the only ones coming to mind.

Is Siberia really that awful? The empty winter plain scene, followed by the spring thaw scene, left a strong impression on me.

Did he make any other big, spare movies? I now think it may have been all the clutter in The Seven Samurai that put me off, and prevented me appreciating his pacing.

Telling the audience that a character is going to die, and then putting him in lots of possibly fatal situations is a bizarre way to create tension. Works, though. _

At todays price, my weight in gold is worth $892,113.60; those killed on September 11th, 2001 were apparently worth significantly more than that. I sincerely hope that the 60% of the people who didn't sign up for the compensation did so because they didn't feel right taking the money; and not because they were hoping for more than the $1.6 million (average, but still). I hope those who try to sue don't get a cent and are roundly denounced as scoundrels or fools who listened to scoundrels. I suppose we'll find out. _

I'd feel a whole lot better if I were convinced that our possessions were finite. Or if the elevator worked, one of the other. _

I can think of nothing quite as depressing as reading random newsgroups. The pettiness, the hostility... ach. _

Gregg Easterbrook, who writes both clearly, intelligently, and angrily about the military, NASA, foreign policy, and various other geekish things, now has a blog. The blog phenomenon is probably the best thing that could have happened to journalism; now everyone can learn firsthand how hard it is to turn out interesting prose for an anonymous, invisible audience; and learn to appreciate the professionals. _

What Berlusconi said about Mussolini, in context. Apparently controlling the bulk of the media allows politicians to grow careless. _

Make that where we are going to live. Just signed the lease. I'd type more, but the demon-cat won't let me. _

the Fiddler on the Roof soundtrack occupies prime mental real estate because my father had an 8 track in the car, and scavanged the flea market for cassettes for it. I used to think of a rabbi as something like a rabbit, only with horns, whose eyes could be crossed by difficult problems. _
