To be an expert is, by definition, to make other people feel ignorant and stupid. This can be done either honestly, or artificially, in which case it is evil. It is much easier to do artificially. Professors are professional experts. The best thing about St. Johns is the system of multi-disiplinary tutors whose main task is to allow people to speak out of ignorance.

A juvenile tern, seen at east beach. There were two other terns that came, and fed it periodically. Taken through a inexpensive spotting scope, and photoshopped within an inch of its life.

What with Erika thinking she may not continue at graduate school, we need to decide where to go next. Back to Ann Arbor would probably make the most sense if I wanted to work for this company for the rest of my life, but I don't, and we both feel we've done Ann Arbor already. In Boston I could keep this job, maybe get it back full time, and could in theory take classes if the desire took me; also, I like Boston, and there appear to be lots of exciting jobs to be found there. The other office which would make some sense is on the northern side of Atlanta. I know nothing about Atlanta. My untutored impression is that it is unpleasantly warm and humid, full of parking lots, and big beyond all sense.

Reasons to like the California recall: The 2 party system looks like it is shattering for this one election. With so many people in the race, negative campaigning will be much less effective. It will give an idea of what elections might look like in a proportional system. Everyone loves a circus. Gray Davis and Al Gore can form a 'won the vote but lost the election' support group. It is a long way away from me.
