Sarah's Bloglet

Deborah Tannen on mothers and daughters. Reading stuff like this makes me feel damn lucky. For all the fear-of-confrontation, passive-aggressive issues I picked up at home (and I think I'm only aware of them because my mom worked to get hers down to a manageable level), my mom never needled at me like this. _

Oh fucking eh. Why do people assume that it's okay to say racist shit to people who aren't members of the disparaged race? I think the next time this happens -- and I'm pretty sure there will be a next time -- I'll quit with the innocent, "I don't understand how her being Black relates to her incompetence," schtick and say right out that I don't ever want to hear it again. _

I know three married couples composed of one American woman and one British man. Is this just a quirk of my friends' demographics, or is there some devious scheme to import British men for their accent-based hotness*?

*(I should say that I'm not especially susceptible to the lures of a foreign accent, although I admit that Alexander Siddig would probably be less unnervingly hot without his.) _

Various things:

Every Blonde Redhead album seems to sound like every other, but I don't mind.

Why does the Buffy musical episode always shunt me out of whatever bad mood I'm in? Even though it sure isn't a happy one, it just works like magic.

The other day I caught myself (too late -- isn't it always like that?) being all self-congratulatory for my awareness of societal racism. Of course, I'm white, so I can choose to notice it or not. How nice for me. So I was glad to read this:

Because I'm not some horrible racist person, I'm a sensitive, liberal, totally PC chick, and I want my props for it. And that's what it boils down to. I want to be acknowledged for all my wonderful anti-racist attitudes, when in fact I'm just like a fish who isn't aware of the water--racism is all around me, and I'm stuck in it, breathing it, part of it, whether I like it or not. _

MSNBC article: When Murder Hits the Blogosphere:

NEW YORK - Early one morning a few weeks ago, Kara Borden, a 14-year-old from Lititz, Pa., logged onto MySpace. The young, bubbly, blond-haired, brown-eyed homeschooled high school freshman had a profile on the popular networking site.
...
A few hours later she allegedly stood by as her boyfriend, David Ludwig, 18, shot and killed her parents.

David was on MySpace, too.

I saw Jesus Is Magic last night and thought it was pretty funny, although hardly any of the jokes matched Silverman's telling of "The Aristocrats" in that movie.

Silverman makes a lot of jokes about race and racism, and managed to keep enough editorial distance from the vapidly racist character she plays to make it funny. I kept wondering, though, whether I'd be laughing if those epithets had ever been hurled at me. _

Amanda of Pandagon on pharmacists refusing to fill contraceptive prescriptions on the grounds of their religious beliefs:

What I find interesting about this whole thing is how rarely someone points out that the pharmacists acting like martyrs and claiming religious discrimination are doing so in order to discriminate against their customers, and on two levels, no less. There's the obvious one--they are discriminating against women, holding female customers to a standard that the customers have sex lives the pharmacists approve of or they don't get their drugs. But they are also discriminating against customers for their religious/personal belief systems. If someone is taking contraceptive pills, she obviously doesn't have a personal belief that women controlling their own reproduction is wrong. And it's likely that many women who use the pill are like me and think that women controlling when and who we have children with is a moral good, so anyone who tries to force us to comply to their personal belief system instead of ours seems to me to be discriminating himself.
