Sarah's Bloglet

Sumana's column this week reminds me of all the times I've wound up in Orinda because I missed my BART stop. Always Orinda. Now I associate that art deco movie theater with a sensation of mild panic. _

I'm sleep-deprived but in a very good mood. Hot disco damn!

My roommate and I threw a party this weekend and I had no idea so many people could fit in my apartment. Remember those Pinkney parties, Johnnies? The ones that were fun because you'd run into your entire sophomore seminar on your way to the bathroom? The ones that were fire hazards? That was my house on Saturday night. _

Reading this post and the ensuing discussion over at Bitch, Ph.D. makes me realize how absolutely terrified I am of being economically dependent on a spouse. Which is kind of funny, since I sort of automatically tracked myself into this pink-collar job, which is well below my abilities, because I didn't know what else I could do and then didn't believe myself capable of more. _

This is hardly a new trend, but I've noticed lots of antibacterial and now antimicrobial items for sale. Does anyone else think that they might serve a sort of talismanic purpose for those who buy them? I can't see how they'd be really helpful unless you're, say, on chemo -- and I imagine that using them all the time would weaken one's immune system/s. Any thoughts along these lines -- especially from people who buy this sort of thing, since I've just called you all superstitious -- would be entertaining. Throw me a frikkin bone, people. _

Aww, Wikipedia's Main Page featured an article on cyberpunk today. Ever since I opened up Firefox this morning "Mirrorshades" has been stuck in my head. (I like how it references Dostoevsky -- badly -- as well as William Gibson. Absolutely digital!) _

Can anyone recommend a digital camera? What I really want is an SLR that fits in my pocket (who doesn't) but until the laws of physics change I'll settle for the next step down in a lens. I'm also looking for something with a manual setting and minimal lag time between pressing the button and taking the picture.

Basically, just bitch about your cameras here, please. _

Why is data entry so much harder during the afternoon than during the morning? I managed all right earlier today, but now the spreadsheet's just making me dizzy. Caffeine would help, but I'm on maintenace doses these days and really don't want to ramp up my tolerance. This shit ain't worth it. _

Mirabai's post reminded me that it's blogswap season, so last night, as I was importing music into itunes (a massive project -- I'm only through maybe 1/16 of my cds), I made most of a mix. It is danceable in places and yowly in others and meta all over. (Martin will still want to listen to it, I hope.) So let me know if you're interested in a copy. You can email your mailing address to sasquatchfeeder at hotmail dot com (or to one of my real-er email addresses if you like). _

Last night the train I was on got held up for about an hour after someone stole someone else's ipod on the station platform and then fired a shot. I heard a bang but didn't realize what it signified until the cops showed up with a barking german shepherd. They proceeded to evacuate us to the next car, tell us to get down below the seats, and run all over the train and platform with their handguns out, looking for the criminal. After about half an hour some more policemen, armed with rifles that I assume were full of tear-gas canisters or beanbags or whatnot, entered our car along with others. They yelled at us to get our hands on our heads and proceeded to lead a young man out of the car and handcuff him. Ten minutes later we were on our way. _
