One of the wonderful things about the song "Jazz Dance" (by Dazz Band) is the way the phrase "Shake ya booty" is sung like it's one word. _

The door to our office is at the top of a flight of stairs. My desk is to the right of the door as you enter, and the rest of the office is to the left. One of my coworkers habitually looks to the right before heading off to the left. There's nothing to see there, he just does, and the look on his face is so anxious and sad. _

An interesting (and occasionally frustrating) article about high-achieving women dropping out of their careers for motherhood. (NY Times free registration required.) Author Lisa Belkin acknowledges (without dismissing) several criticisms of her subject matter up-front, but only in the last few pages does she even mention what, to my mind, is one of the crucial questions here: Why is choosing childcare (or un-choosing work) mainly an option for women? This could be addressed by talking to husbands and fathers (who, presumably, are working to support their wives and children) but not one was quoted in the article.

Belkin does acknowledge the imbalance and address it to some extent. One of the more interesting quotes is from top Princeton biologist Shirley Tilghman: '"My fantasy is a world where there are two kinds of people -- ones who like to stay home and care for children and ones who like to go out and have a career," she says. "In this fantasy, one of these kinds can only marry the other." But the way it seems to work now is that ambitious women seem to be attracted to ambitious men. Then when they have children together, "someone has to become less ambitious." And right now, it tends to be the woman who makes that choice.'

In the article Belkin also quotes Sarah Blaffer Hrdy, who, well, rocks. _
