--Too Early to Plan--

Well, Bob, I think if he get's more votes than his opponent, he's going to win.

I hate election night. _

Jargon of the Day:  Slugging. It's a neat example of society adjusting itself in response to changes in the law, in this case, HOV lanes. _

They've changed our password policy!  "has not been used in the previous 24 passwords"  I want to cry.  This particular password is one of the last on my list to change.  I try to keep them all synchronized.  Now I gave to go back and change all the other ones, and some of them have cooldown periods before you can change them again.  I use this one in 6 places.  I take an absurd pride in never writing down a password, but sometimes I think it would serve them right if I scrawled it on my cubicle wall in crayon. _

I'm going with the Globe endorsements in other statewide elections, though I'm going to defy them on the Governor's race.

Treasurer: Grossman - this one is a no brainer: the Republican supports Question 3, the sales tax cut.

Auditor: Connaughton - this confirms Erika's impression from the interviews.

Attorney General: Coakley - She has problems, but her opponent is a loon.

They don't have endorsements in other races, which means more homework...

Secretary of State: Galvin - His opponent is running on requiring ID to vote, so, no.

Middlesex Sheriff:  Tranchetta.   I liked his answers to the questionnaires slightly better, but I'm voting for his fantastic handlebar mustache.

Governor's Council:  I didn't even know this office existed.  It vets judges, or something.  Only the democrat filled out the questionnaire, so I guess I'm voting for him.

Definitely voting for Markey for the House, and our state legislature candidates, who I'd love to vote against, are unopposed.  We definitely have too much of the form of democracy here, without enough of the substance.   _

My office building was sold in a foreclosure auction last week.  Nice building, fantastic location, at the end of the red line.  At least half vacant.  Meanwhile, a mess of new buildings are going up just down the street.  Something wrong here.   _

The Prairie Home Companion just did an absolutely awesome version of the Rolling Stones Dead Flowers.   I'll try to remember to link once they have it up on the web. _

Summaries of the Governor's race, from WBUR and the Globe.  I am still somewhat undecided.  I love Baker on healthcare, he absolutely gets it.  I'm willing to dismiss his answer on question 1 as a pander.   Baker really bothers me on immigration.  I like his opposition to the public sector unions and his positions on education, though Patrick isn't bad on either.   I won't be upset with either Patrick or Baker: neither is part of the local democratic machine.  I dislike Patrick: I think he's a parody of Barack Obama come to life, vacuous ambition.  But there are worse sorts of Governors, and I agree with him on most things.  I need to decide which matters more right now, here, immigration or healthcare.  Normally it would be immigration, but Massachusetts healthcare plan is unusually important right now, that it work.  Baker is one of the best people to manage that.  (I really admire Harvard Pilgrim)   Not many other races: I need to read the endorsements on Treasurer, Auditor and Sheriff.  No on all ballot questions.  _

Okay, okay, I've got a game.  What's the coolest name for something that's actually incredibly uninteresting?  My nominee: hypervisor. You will simply not believe how uninteresting it is.  _

I feel guilty about this: I found myself singing "like a duck without any legs, I will drift around" to the tune of bridge over troubled water. This may or may not be related to the previous post, I'm not sure. _

So, if you had to work here, where would you want to live? I really like where I live, but sometimes I feel I should either take my career seriously, or find a different one, and for better or worse, that's where my current career is located. _

I on my way back from Timonium where I met my parents and a stray aunt and uncle for dinner, I first went to the wrong hotel, a perfectly nice place in Pikeville, that unfortunately wasn't where I had my reservation, went in, where they kindly gave me directions, which got me completely lost.  Suffice it to say, I wasn't impressed with my tour of suburban Baltimore.  I dearly hope I saw every Mattress Discounter in the vicinity, I'd hate to think there were any more.  Also, how much storage does a community need?  Don't they have attics in Maryland?  There's just way too much parking per capita around these parts.  And the office is in this endless winding maze of deeply depressing one story commercial houses: like horrible concrete bungalow's full of cubicles, with the lawns striped off into parking.  like a Though I have to say, I was happy to learn that there's a place called Chick'n Trout.   At one point I drove past the Owings Mills nightmare, err, sorry, mall.  I only saw the parking garage.  I believe it's the tallest building for miles.  Also, the truck to car ratio here is worse than it is in Maine.  What do they use them for?  Towing their boats, I guess.  I really don't like it here.  The first hotel I went to, there was an englishman at the desk, they asked him if he wanted to use the gym while he was there.  He said no, but where was a good place to go for a walk?  They didn't seem to think Pikeville was pedestrian friendly, and suggested the inner harbor, figuring, I think, that he would want to drive half an hour to go for a morning walk.  Eventually they gave him a bus schedule.  It was rather sad.  He seemed to think he was in civilization.  I don't know what's wrong with this place, but there's something, some sort of asphalt conspiracy.  The only thing I saw today that I liked was the Texas Quarry.   That's not quite true.  On the plane I finally came to a understanding of the East River (it's the long island sound!)  and discovered the Raritan Bay, which was pretty cool.  It's one of my goals to one day try to remember the name 'Perth Amboy' but not be able to, and now that I know the body of water it's on, that's a good start, I feel. _
