"It's about 2 feet wide."

"I was a great, deep jungle, and I had to hack my way through with tiny, tiny scissors." _

Still playing World of Warcraft.  The mage is in a progression raiding guild, and I'm vaguely working on a priest and a druid, learning to heal and tank.  I feel I am risking stigma by saying this, but eh.  Anyone else?  It has entirely displaced video games, go and largely displaced pointless websurfing.  It is a good compromise between competition and cooperation for me.  It no longer displaces sleep.  Between it and my knee problems, I gained a dozen pounds last winter, most of which are gone again now (I have returned to online weightwatchers, which is expensive and makes me feel silly, but the convenience of it over calorie counting means I actually do it)  Knee is still creaky enough that I've declined to reserve a spot at badminton next year.  I was thinking it was better, but then we went and shot hoops at the local playground and it whined again.    _

A remarkable article about the ban on beards in the civil service in the Japanese city of Isesaki.

A legal defense committee led by human-rights advocate Debito Arudou (of course he has a beard) and law professor Colin P. A. Jones is looking into whether Isesaki used off-budget secret funds to operate a barbershop in the basement of City Hall and provided free haircuts and shaves to public employees. Arudou reportedly tried to enter the barbershop but was refused access because his beard didn't look Japanese, even though he insisted that his beard did, in fact, become Japanese several years ago. _

Updating my favorite metric:  the volume of the oil spill is now somewhere in between that of the population of greater Boston and the population of greater LA.   _

Homemade mayonnaise is yummy!  This is a tremendous relief.  I have never understood why I didn't like mayonnaise, since, on principle, it seems like such a good idea.    _

I dislike rhetorical questions with obvious answers.  For example, "Why can the government bail out the banks, but they can't stop the flow of oil into the Gulf?"  The answer being, of course, that it's rather easy to give bankers money, if you have bankers and money.  You actually have to work quite hard to stop bankers taking money off you.   Robot submarines are totally unnecessary. _

Hitchens calls for the abolition of the Monarchy. Well, mostly he calls Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor names.  "The heir to the throne seems to possess the ability to surround himself—perhaps by some mysterious ultramagnetic force?—with every moon-faced spoon-bender, shrub-flatterer, and water-diviner within range."  In particular, he is piqued that the next head of state appears to oppose the enlightenment.   _

While the scriptural evidence that Jesus had a puppy is circumstantial at best...  I don't know how best to complete that sentence.  I thought of it while half asleep, only to find that, like all good ideas involving puppies, the internet has it covered. _

My contemplation upon the stair carpeting can now be read on Boston.com.  I still need to do something about the stairs, they look a bit scruffy.  However, I will note that the emphasis is not mine.  I don't bold my emails.

We have some sort of horribly thorny plant that vaguely resembles boxwood growing under our gigantic holly plant.  really vicious thorns.  I feel the need to know it's latin name, though I can't see what good it will do me.   _

I am prepping the small bedroom for painting.  In practice, this means I am walking aimlessly around the house, having lost both my banana and my spackle. _
