Fallows on Michael Crichton. I think of Crichton as the high water mark of the modern, professional novel. Insofar as there is a science to writing, his are the best I've read. My favorite, from this point of view, was The Great Train Robbery. At one point, after discovering him, I thought maybe I'd like thrillers, and tried Clancy, etc. Not so much. _
