There comes a point when reading Edward Lear when your realize that it just doesn't make any sense, and isn't going to. It's much more thoroughgoing than mere silliness.  I think the most startling thing about him may be his sheer perserverence.  Reading a hundred pages of it at a go is something of an experience. His utter disregard for conventional literary values like sense, meaning, purpose or conventional jokes, it starts off charming, but turns unsettling as you work your way down into it. _
