Hey, look at that.  Thomson bought Reuters.  And the old CEO is out, with the head of Reuters taking over.  New logos all around, I'd imagine.  I wonder if this means they'll finally spit my old company back out.  A helpful reminder of what the grass over there was actually like. _

According to wikipedia, the correct signal is ...---...---... and so on, not ...---... ...---... ...---...  SOS is just a way of remembering the distress signal, it doesn't stand for anything.  I've wondered about this more or less whenever I have played with a flashlight since childhood. _

Last week I was in the depths of Connecticut, being trained on Crystal Reports.  Itssalright.   But the main outcome of the trip was that I realized just how big my company is.   The office building I was visiting holds about 5,000 employees, a 7th of the company.  It's on a 287 acre lot, in an area that appeared to consist entirely of box stores and strip malls.  I was vaguely aware that the employer was enormous, but I hadn't felt the scale of it before.  This is a branch office, that's being closed down in a couple years, I don't think it was anywhere near capacity.  Sort of a cross between a colony ship and a shopping mall; basically 8 hexagonal 6-story office buildings, called cores (I was in core 6), built around a central corridor.  3 restaurants, one semi-abandoned, and a gift shop.   When you met people in the hallway, there was no expectation of recognition.   _

perfectly good rain
last saturday was more or less ideal beach weather, to my mind. fairly warm, witht the occasional torrential downpour to keep demand for parking spaces low. Water is still too cold to more than wade gingerly, though. _

Arlington in the news.  I'm strangely relieved he was caught in such a indefensible manner, after seeing how the previous accuser was slandered on the town list.  The interesting thing about the town list is that there's very little anger towards him.  This is a community that can work up outrage about the most trivial things, but now that someone so many people know and trust has done something uncontroversially horrible, there is very little.  _
