the sun-up fluffies
my camera remembers the waves being a horrible shade of blue. I do not remember them this way. The real point is that there were periodic sprays of water on the horizon around dawn. _

"We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California."  Clinton, on why she's still running.  This may go down in the history of political gaffes.   I'm not planning to be particularly convinced by the wave of outrage sure to follow.  There's no political calculation here.  It's just cringe inducing.

update: I mean, really. 'We interrupt this Ted Kennedy hagiography to bring word that Hillary Clinton is invoking 1968 as a precedent for the continuing viability of her campaign'. It's even on video. Even beyond the timing, it's unfortunate, because her actual point, which boils down to that the California primary used to be held in June, is not particularly compelling, so there isn't anything to distract from the tin-earedness of it.

2nd update: I should add, since I'm more or less opposed to party unity anyway, I think the whole question of whether she should drop out is silly, and between her and her creditors. The whole topic is a symptom of a political news bubble. This episode interests me more for it's Fawlty Tower aspects. _

the adaptability of birds
Please note that there is still a bird at the feeder in this shot. I don't have that kind of nerve. _

blowing sand
All the dry sand was scoured off in gusts and sent into the water. Presumably this is part of what keeps the mudflats flat. _

dunlin flying
please note how there was no one else on the beach. This is because the sand was blowing hard enough to sting. those birds are moving sideways. _

dunlin
the mudflats were well supplied with Dunlin, with a few black-bellied plover mixed in. Also the inevitable gulls, and some brant out by the surf. _

wading erika
On the windiest day, we walked out on the mudflats, about an hour before high tide. Our feet got deeply and profoundly cold. The initial plan was to walk out through the couple inches of water, sit on the sandbar waiting for the tide to finish dropping, and then walk back through the dry, but our feet weren't getting any warmer on the sandbar, so we retreated. Also, the mysterious black things in the distance turned out to be fish traps, not seals. _
