We caught a turtle!  Little painted turtle, Erika just snatched it up off the log.  It looked very fierce.  This is the benefit of a 2 person kayak. Much easier to sneak up on drowsy reptiles. I am very pleased with the new kayak, an Innova Sunny. It's comfortable, works great either 1 or 2 person, comes with an excellent bag, inflates painlessly, keeps going in the direction in which it is pointed, and is narrow yet not tippy. We'd never been tandem kayaking before. I did conk her on the head once, but other than that it was an entirely pleasant experience. Much faster and more sociable than solo kayaks, and just generally more graceful than canoeing. _

In bollywood reviews, they talk about how a song was picturised on an actress; that is, the actress was shown singing the song.  Not by, but on.   The relative inconsequence of acting is reflected in the language.  Also, a song and dance number is called a song picturisation.  _

I had some sort of virus software failure a few months ago, and it ate my favorite photoshop filter. It also ate Civilization IV, which was probably a good thing. Which is all to say, I'm playing with new filters for scrubbing out unwanted detail, and don't want it held against me. _

thug
this beast was at anchor outside the best nesting spot on the pond, half asleep, until I honked at him, at which point he turned slowly on me and glowered. I found his fluffy neck menacing. _

At the moment, there are also 4 or 5 unattached swans gadding about and growling. _

sprouting reeds
This nesting site wasn't used last year. Looks like we've got at least 3 pair of swans. Geese are harder to count, because they nest further in on the island, and don't build gigantic reed rafts, but there are 2 sitting on waterfront nests. _

3 part birch
The nice thing about geese guarding nests is that they stand still. I've got about a dozen failed grackle pictures from this trip. _

Sheep! Border collies! Architecture! Though it looks like there may be more than a critical mass of reenactors, so I may need to steer clear. Allergies, you understand. _

Awesome!  PETA approved chicken vats!  I am all about this. May chickens and pigs soon be luxurious anachronisms, like horses. _

I hadn't realized that pander used to mean pimp.  Vaguely interesting that pimp is showing signs of trying to follow pander into metaphorical acceptability in politics.  There are currents in language. Polite words get used as euphemisms and become rude, and rude words get used metaphorically to jolt and become polite. _
