Slate V (for video) is for the most part utterly misconceived, but these Alex Chadwick 50c interviews are tremendous. He's apparently been doing it for years. He sets up a table, puts up a sign, interviews, 50c, and unrolls great big hungry silences in front of passers-by. All 3 so far are bizarrely moving. _

Okay, so, with this song quiz thing. At least for me, putting the list together was a kind of vanity, which was sort of unpleasant, and beyond that, there's a section of the music I listen to which just isn't part of shared experience, which kind of defeats the purpose. So I thought I'd try again, with stuff I heard off the radio in the past two days, that I enjoyed on one level or another. These are all things that, if I wouldn't have gotten, would at least have really bugged me. Is this more or less pointless than the previous quiz?

1: Won't you take a ride on the flying spoon?
2: Nation's stand against him, he's your brother
3: They're only checks I've left unsigned from the banks of chaos in my mind
4: That's like hypnotising chickens
5: Did you really think about it before you changed the rules?
6: have a limo, ride in the back. I lock the doors in case I'm attacked
7: Hanging out the passenger side of his best friend's ride
8: The kind you don't bring home to mother
9: Blown by the wind. Blown by the wind
10: That I can't get by with my 9 to 5
11: it's the same old deed since 1916
12: With a bit of rock music everything is fine

Okay, I've got myself confused again. Say you have an election where it's an open ballot, and everyone can see how everybody else votes, but once you vote, it's binding. Do you want to vote early, to maximize your influence, or late, to maximize your information? I really would have thought you'd want to vote somewhere in the middle. So why is so much of the country voting on Tuesday? _

Completely harmless things that nonetheless bother me: Vanilla meaning plain or bland. Vanilla is a strong, interesting, exotic flavor, that happens to fill out sweetness well, and that is pretty well universally liked, so has become ubiquitious in certain categories of food. There's nothing bland about it. _

Right. Lyric guessing contest time. First dozen songs off the ipod. I'll try to be less obscure than last time, where you lot only got 3.
1. Nothing but the knife to live for. One life, all I need.
2. The double-wide shine on the bootheels of your prime
3. But life is more than going to see things, and that's too bad.
4. Drawn across the plainland to the place that is higher. Drawn into the circle that dances round the fire.
5. You must have heard wrong, grandma, there's no tailor.
6. I was looking for a job and then I found a job.
7. Make a cup of tea. Put a record on. (by bizarre coincidence, also #7 last time)
8. They're coming through the window, they're coming through the door.
9. There's truth in all I see. I don't know where money goes. Think about it.
10. I'm aching, and have been for hours, and nobody knows, I'm never alone now.
11. I was wearing the cross of my calling. On wheels of fire I come rollin' down 'ere.
12. like a pocket-knife folded up inside, until you see the shine and then you want it back.

Mike FM (93.7 in Boston) just played this Mananama / Are you gonna be my girl mashup, which I'm entirely happy with, despite being generally less excited about mash-ups than my demographics would suggest. I dislike the title "Are you gonna be my animal", though, because, as everyone should know, Animal didn't sing Mananama. _

Kinsley on economic stimulus: "But the current debate is virtually all about tax cuts. Republicans want them to go to business. Democrats want them to go to the poor and middle class. Both parties are fond of tax credits for approved interest groups and favored forms of behavior. The notion that the government is good for anything except issuing checks and printing money has just about disappeared." _
