Three-dollar pretzel needs to be an expression. I'm not sure what it would mean, but things need to be compared to three-dollar pretzels. As disappointing as a three-dollar pretzel? As soulless as a three-dollar pretzel? Well, it smelled good, but it turned out it was just a three-dollar pretzel. _

Is it just an accident of history that music and video have successfully gone digital before books, that the industries happened to embrace CD's and DVD's without realizing the consequences? Is it the fault of the paper-fetishists? The publishing monopoly? A technological hurdle with the displays? (asked while pining for the waterproof ebook reader he was sure he would have by now) _

Anyone want pizza? Not me.
Did anyone order pizza? Not I.

Is there any grammatical excuse for this? I think I do this entirely because of The Little Red Hen. I think I choose based entirely on how defensive I feel about the question. _

Listening to Ayaan Hirsi Ali on the radio has made we question whether I need to take my lack of faith more seriously. I have always lived in a world where I have felt entirely safe as an atheist. The point I came away with from listening to her is that we are in danger of misunderstanding the notion of secular religious tolerance, which is one of the great accomplishments of the modern world, and is nothing to be ashamed of. She is claiming, more or less, that the assumptions necessary to make multi-culturalism feasible are simply absent when it comes to large parts of Islam; and that the desire to believe it is possible is making us abondon our principles. I'm rambling, but that's because I'm troubled by my complacency. If there were a Church of the Godless, she'd be an excellent fundraiser. I would love to support secular missionaries to god-infested lands. And no, the UU doesn't count. Angry leftists talk about the administration as a theocracy, but that's dangerous hypobole. At least where I work and live, it is harder to be truly pious than truly godless. I have faced absolutely no discrimination, and barely any pressure. I'm yet to be denounced once. Being an american christian atheist is simple and painless. The way she tells it, being a muslim atheist is another thing all together. _

I am eating a muffin. It is yellow, and sweet. I honestly can't decide if it's supposed to be a lemon muffin or a corn muffin. All I know is that it is yellow. It tastes like neither. It tastes like yellow. I even harbor an unworthy suspicion that it may be a lemon-corn muffin. _

Ian Richardson has died. My father went through a phase, after watching House of Cards where he would not stop using the line "You might think that, I couldn't possibly comment", regardless of context or sense. One of Mr. Richardson's final roles was as, uhm, the voice of Death in a Terry Pratchett adaptation. I think of him as part of a set of three, along with Nigel Hawthorne and Ian MacKellen, charmingly fishlike Shakespearean villains. _

I think I may actually be happy about the Pandagon-Edwards implosion. She's being badly misrepresented, but she'll do just fine out of it, she'll be the next Sandra Tsing Loh (only actually amusing!), and with her careless fury about the Duke case, she shouldn't complain too loudly about being slandered in public by people who don't have the facts. If it's true she hasn't ever backed down from those comments, that does bug me a little. The anti-catholic aspect seems completely blown out a proportion. I myself rely on a firm distinction between being amused by catholic dogma and being bigoted against catholics. I'm really quite looking forward to what she'll say about it (assuming she actually is fired). Edwards will suffer a bit either way, but I don't mind that, he makes my skin creep anyway. And in general, the angry end of the blogosphere could do with being a bit more careful about libel. _

Religions that I was unaware of!

Bahá'í Faith: A kind of 19th century persian monotheistic universalism. Excessively cheerful sounding. Mandaeism A small ethnic religion in southern Iraq. Their prophets are Adam, Noah and John the Baptist.

I think I want to read a history of minor religions, but I don't actually. _
