Tim's Bloglet

I have become accustomed to the incompetence of my own organization. What I am only beginning to grasp is that my company isn't unique is this respect: that every organization we deal with is roughly similar, and a good number are completely non-functional. It's like a vision: great vistas of mutton-headedness are opening before me. _

I think video games may have ruined TV and film for me. Not entirely, but pretty well. I get fidgety if I'm not controlling something occasionally. _

rode 37 miles, up around Billrica and Carlisle. Some beautiful old colonial farm houses, and a surprising amount of farms and reservation land. Rolling country roads are entertaining. Have pictures, but too lazy to form coherent judgements just now. The, what are they called? little trees that live in bogs. They're changing, but not much else yet. Roads are, in a way, more relaxing than bike paths. On roads, you just have to stay right, and keep to your line. No toddlers to dodge. Though, 18 wheelers? They're large. Also went 35 down a hill in a 30 mile zone. Am now fairly sure I will be able to do the 40 mile loop for Hub on Wheels in two weeks. It took me 4h 30 min, but that included lunch and grocery shopping. Of course, we'll see if I can walk tomorrow.

A overlooked benefit of recumbents: the pedals have better ground clearence, so you don't have to worry about them catching the curb. Of course, that doesn't mean riding an inch from the curb is wise, exactly. _

I find it vaguely interesting that, now that Slate is no longer a microsoft product, it has stopped working with Firefox. Also that the senate, as a political organization, seems far wiser than the house. Is this because it's higher status, so gets a better class of legislator, or because it's less democratic? Or just that it's smaller? Or that it's full of people running for president, so more interested in looking good than, um, whatever it is the house is interested in? _

They're remaking one of my favorite movies, Sleuth, with Michael Caine in the Laurence Olivier role, and Jude Law in the Michael Caine role. Sort of neat, but is this actually a good idea? It's like the remake of the Ladykillers, which I still haven't seen. Shouldn't they focus on remaking things that were done badly the first time? I mean, whatever they do, it won't have Olivier in it. That's something I'd like to watch... Old Olivier movies. _

I seem to be in a ticket buying mood. Bach Cello Suites at the Gardiner Museum, the Birju Maharaj Dance Company at Somerville Theatre, and Paul Simon at the Agganis Arena. Arlo Guthrie is also vaguely tempting. _

User servicable parts inside:
My cell phone is no longer plagued by periodic beeping fits and illusory power supplies! I went to the hardware store, bought a #00 philips head screwdriver, and took the thing apart. One area near the plug mount looked a bit corroded. I scrubbed it gently with a dry toothbrush, put it back together, and it no longer thought it was plugged in! One of the screws was hidden under a rubber plug that was a real pest to get out. Fortunately, I lost that screw, so next time it will be easier. Also, I now carry a ziplock bag in my bike so I can keep the finicky thing dry. _

I'll be doing the Hub on Wheels ride around Boston again this year; it was tremendous fun last year. This time they're meeting at City Hall and closing Storrow Drive to cars. I'd encourage anyone in the area with a bike to go, even if you don't cycle much: it's slowpoke friendly. _

Listened to the democratic governors debate. I'm going to vote for Gabrieli, but I don't mind if Patrick wins (yes, even our black chicago politicians have irish names). I like tying tax cuts to the economy, as opposed to promises, and I would rather they cut the income tax, instead of property taxes. Gabrieli has a much better grasp of health care than the other two, and the problems with the current bill. Patrick would be fine, but he's too close to the legislature, and was unwilling to step on some of the entrenched interests (employer health plans, U Mass). Both of them can talk. As a health care bearaucrat, it was amusing to hear Reilly say that we could pay for universal health care through cutting administration and overhead. I immediately thought, ooh, that would be good for business. I think one of the reasons they don't want that database of government contracts to come online is that then people could see just how much money is spent on failed attempts to save money in administration. I wouldn't vote for him anyway, but Reilly disqualified himself, when, as the most scandal ridden candidate, he went negative with his first statement of the debate. _

Yeah, so, if you're in the area, go see Lage Raho Munna Bhai. It's playing at Fresh Pond. You know how there are two sorts of Bollywood movies, the good ones, and the dreadful ones? This is solidly one of the former. The music is only okay, and it isn't particularly pretty, but it's funny. I'm not sure I've ever seen a funny indian movie before. Bri4n, this means you. _
