I know about tourists

The gulls were utterly unphased by the well mannered tourists on the walkway. There were even ones nesting on rocks in unfenced areas. I was told that chasing one off it's nest to try to get an egg picture was not done. _

goat island colony

The gulls seem to live off stuff picked out of the rapids above the falls. I'm curious whether fish that live upstream from Niagara have developed a reluctance to swim downstream, and whether it is cultural or genetic. _

There is a large ring necked gull colony on goat Island between the falls. _

bottom of the bridal veil

All the rocks at the bottom were covered with healthy quantities of something remarkably green and slimy. The wooden walkways to the left are the "Cave of the winds" walk. You can just see 2 people in yellow ponchos. _

These new Mac ads make me irrationally angry. They're misleading... smug... tone deaf. I'm used to seeing beer and toyota ads that repel me, but Apple? Apple is a childhood friend. Humph. _

Easterbrook has a fascinating paper on global warming he did for the brookings institution. Highlights: he covers the new data that has led to consensus. This made me feel much better, that there is data out there under all the yammering. Also, the pros and cons of global warming, a sane alternative to Kyoto, reasons for optimism, and what happened to acid rain.

I've always been vaguely skeptical about global warming, largely because of an old exhibit I saw at the smithsonian when I was in high school about the dreadful dangers of global cooling, my belief that pop scientists talk exclusively through their hats, but primarily a feeling that I was being browbeaten. I'm strangely relieved that I can stop being contrary on the main point. _

The repose of the map turtle

We spotted it nosing above the water, and were able to follow it when it swam away and settled on the bottom. It was shallow enough that I was able to just lean over and pick it up. _
