IKEA! tomorrow! If I leave at 9, I should get there a bit before it opens. I'm actually thinking I won't be buying too much, because I don't have to: I can go back! It feels absurdly like Christmas eve. I should measure windows and such. New computer desk, a bookshelf for the kitchen, new curtains/blinds. Kitchenwares, maybe. Possibly a rug for the bedroom. Some sort of light for the front closet. Would have to be battery powered. Contemplate light fixtures. A kneeling chair, except they don't sell them. _

So, I'm evesdropping on this meeting by phone. It appears that one of the tools of a sucessful federal contractor is a trumpetlike sycophantic laugh. _

Stupid California! They defeated Prop. 77. It wasn't even close. I don't see any way political redistricting can be stopped in this country. Incumbent protection is one issue that will always unite the elected officials, and apparently Californians would rather spite a politician that they elected than improve government. I haven't seen a single principled argument against Prop 77. (Well, except the anti-proposition position, that votes no on everything because it doesn't like direct democracy). Now that we have a big splashy anti-gerrymandering referendum failing, politicians have absolutely no reason to raise the issue, and no democrat will be able to accuse the republicans who oppose similar bills in other states of manuevering for political advantage at the cost of good government with a straight face. I would have voted for prop 74 as well, but I recognize that I may have excessive personal animosity towards the public teachers union for keeping my mother, a teacher in England, out of the schools and then again after she got, ha, training in CT, only to move to PA and lose it all over again. All this while making my mediocre high school teachers untouchable and unmotivated. And I had no reason to expect the electorate to be sensible on this one; Teachers and Doctors are politically untouchable, dispite our awful schools and openly corrupt medical system.

Great Blue Heron. Juvenile? Fresh Pond was wall to wall dog walkers and agonized joggers on saturday morning. We were approached by two seperate groups asking us what the bird was. Also saw two kingfishers chasing each other about and making a racket. _

Also, I seriously need to break my lifelong habit of using my left leg as a booster seat. This latest twinge clearly demonstrates that doing so is far from ergonomic. _

To borrow a phrase, Judas Priest on a Bicycle. As long time readers doubtless recall, 2 years ago I sprained my back while travelling for work, came home, took a very hot bath, and ended up with back spasms that stopped me walking for 3 days. Since then, whenever it happens I take a day off and commune with an ice pack, and I'm just fine. Today, on the eve of a business trip, I sprained by back again. Do I call it off, or try to muddle through? I seriously don't trust my motives here. As an established malingerer, I am never entirely convinced that I am in fact ill, and not simply trying to get out of something unpleasant. Yet, I'm clearly limping, and making involuntary squeaking noises when I sit down or stand up. If it did start spasming while I was in Baltimore, that would be Decidedly Inconvenient. However, it might not. I might be just fine. The meeting is important, at least to my boss. But even if I'm not malingering, the back problem is caused by stress, so it's my fault for getting stressed out about the trip, thereby avoiding it. Bah. How can I trust my motives when I'm pleased to have an excuse? _

We have a good barbecue place! I have no idea why vinegar pulled pork isn't a fast food staple. Also good homemade pickle slices, and not-too-sweet baked beans. All right, the cornbread was practically a betty crocker yellowcake, and the coleslaw was mayonaisse not buttermilk, but these are minor quibbles. Erika's burnt-end sandwich was also delicious, and absurdly soft. In an old soda shop. _

It is reassuring to remember that this President of Iran isn't any more important than the previous one was, and that the supreme leader hasn't done anything destructively stupid in the 16 years he's been in power. _
