In a health care setting, would you rather be referred to as a:
Patient
Recipient
Customer
Consumer
Victim
Consumer seems to be the emerging standard, after many years of Recipient. Recipient sounds too passive, you see. Patient is considered to carry a stigma, it makes it sound like there's something wrong with you. Customer sounds as though you might be expected to pay for things. Victim is my own innovation, for internal use only.

There's also the question of what to call you if you have coverage:
An Enrollee
An Eligible
A Member
Though this is less a matter of political correctness. Employers have enrollees, government programs have eligibles, and HMOs have members. _

Trying to point a bird out to a cat is a distressingly fruitless endeavor. Pointing is not in their vocabulary. _

but everyone was acting normal so I tried to look nonchalant. I woke up at 8:45, and made it in to work for a 9am call. My hair is a bit more exciting than I usually permit, my clothing isn't up to code, I paid $3 for a bad danish, horrible orange juice and a banana, but I made it. An odd side effect is that I sang TMBG's She's an Angel all the way to work. Out loud, while cycling. It seems set to be in my head all day. Perhaps my normal sluggish morning routine in fact only serves to depress me and clear my head of its secret nocternal singing. _

Have discovered that cycling down Massachusetts Ave isn't nearly as frightening as watching someone else cycle down Massachusetts Ave. Also, Google Maps needs a 'What on earth is that?' feature. _

Is it just me, or is New Pope getting an awful lot of criticism for believing precisely the same things that Old Pope did, same stands on the same issues, a week after Old Pope was universally sniffled over? It feels as though all the nasty things people other than Hitchens felt unable to say got saved up for his replacement. _

Yay for somewhat overweight teetotallers!

(For people who don't follow links: Overweight but not obese people are less likely to die than healthy weight people, and all those things about moderate drinkers having fewer heart attacks are not looking very causal.) _
