In a health care setting, would you rather be referred to as a:
Patient
Recipient
Customer
Consumer
Victim
Consumer seems to be the emerging standard, after many years of Recipient. Recipient sounds too passive, you see. Patient is considered to carry a stigma, it makes it sound like there's something wrong with you. Customer sounds as though you might be expected to pay for things. Victim is my own innovation, for internal use only.
There's also the question of what to call you if you have coverage:
An Enrollee
An Eligible
A Member
Though this is less a matter of political correctness. Employers have enrollees, government programs have eligibles, and HMOs have members.
