Reading Lois McMaster Bujold's The Warrior's Apprentice. Very enjoyable. Don't think I've had so much fun reading science fiction since I was 12. Not sure I have much of substance to add to that, yet. More like Asimov than anything else I can think of, but she's much a much sharper writer. Sharp is the word all around, sharp, easy prose, snort-sized jokes, jokes seems like the wrong word, but I can't bring myself to say wit. Maybe Zelazny is closer, but zelazny had no quality control. _

For those who have seen A Very Long Engagement: The president of France, Paul Deschanel does seem to have either fallen or jumped off a train in his pajamas in 1920. He apparently didn't remember how it happened. Less whimsically, he killed himself two years later by throwing himself under a train. _

If I were asked to name a hero of mine this moment, it would have to be Justice Scalia. His dissent is highly recommended reading. _

The ice age is coming. With the Clash running through my head, I wondered what the corresponding terror-inducing phrase is for global warming. Haven't found one yet, but I did find a lovely page about how an ice age is due any day. Read the FAQ for details. _

Have I mentioned that we have a new washer and dryer? We have a new washer and dryer. The dryer (Why not drier? Town Crier. Frequent flier or flyer?) is perhaps more exciting, in it's way. The difference between a quarter-fed timer and a moisture sensor cannot be overstated. _

Why I like Michael Kinsley:

It is obvious to me that today's real estate prices are a speculative bubble that is about to burst. Of course, this has been obvious to me for about three decades, and I've been wrong almost all of that time. Nevertheless. _

Finally bought A New Morning, Suede's last album. Took me 3 years, but still. A few good songs, and some wretchedly awkward ones. Also went trolling the internet and found some good news. Brett Anderson and Bernard Butler are putting out an album as The Tears. _

Special K at one point had an offer for moisterizer on the box, which made me think of moisterizer instead of milk and put me off. However, that's sensible compared to the coupon for $2 off the board game Operation on my frozen lasagna. _
