Tim's Bloglet

In case I've never said why I like that pulpit to the left so much: It reminds me of a cookie press. The wooden sounding board above looks for all the world like it might crush the preacher, should they blaspheme or misrepresent the divine will. It's from the King's Chapel in Boston. _

Every day I come home and check the mail eagerly, hoping that the final W2 has arrived so I can do my taxes. Is this odd? _

Was listening to a tape of the Inspiral Carpets, turned to the radio, and Praise You by Fatboy Slim came on. Disconcertingly similar. _

Went on a birdwalk this morning with a small army of birders, many with beautiful scopes. Saw an adult Bald Eagle, 3 Merlins, including a Merlin taking a bath. I spotted the second Merlin, which made me feel as though I was a contributing member of society. Had never seen either before. Merlins have extraordinarilily predatory eyes. There were a couple of people with small fortunes of camera in attendence. Here are a few pictures of one of the Merlins. The Medford Bird club parking lot off mystic parkway, between the two lakes, for any locals. _

Talking Points Memo is a party hack. I knew this from the beginning, but it bothers me more now that he is trying to use his influence. Sullivan is off to write books. Bull Moose has serious prose style issues. Any non-screaming, fairly professional political blogs with at least a pretense of intellectual integrity you can recommend? Otherwise, I'm back to only reading paid journalists. _

Pull down menus should either not exist at all, or be complete. There should not be little buttons random places that do things that cannot be done from pull-downs, because no one will ever find them. _

Arrays should not start with zero. I understand why it was done that way in the first place, and that everyone is used to it, but it is Wrong, similar to the british first floor. Neither zero nor ground are counting numbers. I feel strongly about this. It is an Unnecessary Cause of Bugs and Reduces Readability. Which is not to say I would ever leave the first spot of my array blank. C# is still so soaked in C that if you do try to venture away from 0 based indices, you simply create more readability problems, because the length function doesn't work, foreach gets unhappy, and on and on. Normally, I simply do array[number - 1]. What sparked this tirade was that I wanted to look at the next member of the array: array[number]. This is Wrong. _
