On Friday night I got a tattoo from an artist here and then went to a birthday party. The partygoers were about equally divided in their reactions to the bloodied saran wrap peeking out from my sleeve: half said, "Ew, what happened to your arm?" and the rest said, "Hey wow, new ink!"

Another reason to love this place. _

You've probably read that the mayor of San Francisco found a way to get legal marriages for same-sex couples. There's been a court battle in attempt to halt the marriages, but it looks like the weddings won't be stopped for a bit. Of course, the marriages will most likely be ruled invalid, thanks to the "Defense of Marriage Act" that went through in 2000.

Despite my qualms about the political fallout for what is basically a symbolic act, I'm really glad to see this happening. I got tears in my eyes when I read the newspaper reports. I also tear up during the Pride Parade and the Dyke March, not because gay rights have a direct effect on my freedom, but because it's beautiful to see anyone standing up for who they are. I look forward to the day when gay marriage won't mean anything more than straight marriage, but I doubt that'll happen in my lifetime. 'Til then, pass the kleenex. _

On the one hand, it's sad to have one's favorable view of a person damaged.

I've been listening to some Simon and Garfunkel lately, and I'm wondering: what was it that makes these songs so much better than most of Paul Simon's solo stuff? Was it Art's contributions, or did Paul just do better stuff back then? _

Back in high school I noticed that the more I hung out with my boyfriend, the more black I wore. Naturally, I drew the conclusion that goth is a sexually transmitted disease.

Years went by, and I stopped drawing tails on my eyeliner and listening to Bauhaus. Lately, however, I seem to be undergoing a gothic resurgence: I just dyed my hair a purply red, and today I looked down at my clothes (black shirt, black pants) and thought, "My blacks don't match".

New conclusion: goth is fashion herpes. _

I skipped the Coat on Tuesday to go to a benefit showing of two films by Betty Dodson (google that one yourselves, I'm at work) at the Parkway for the Lesbian Health Research Center. (My homie Jo, who works at the LHRC, organized the benefit.) The films were rad, although I have to say that my favorite part was the trashy stripper wigs some of Betty's demonstrators were wearing to disguise their identities. (At first I thought all her clients came from New Jersey.) Anyway, I highly recommend Viva la Vulva and Selfloving, even if you don't have the opportunity to watch them projected onto a 20-ft high screen. _

So lately I've been feeling like Ed Norton's character at the beginning of Fight Club. Not insomniac, but possessed of a nameless wrong feeling. I'd like to categorize it; it would feel more manageable that way. Of course, if I continue to avoid dealing with it I'll end up with unpleasant psychosomatic symptoms. Those will have names and superficial treatments. And won't that be grand. _

Taking a leaf from Mirabai's book: TIAILW: Irshad Manji.
OMG, she so cute! Which has nothing to do with why she's interesting, but probably something to do with how she gets on tv. And of course I wouldn't dig her so much if she weren't saying stuff that my left-wing cracker ass likes to hear. Tell me again about ijtihad! _
