Sarah's Bloglet

One of the office denizens just overheard an Elvis Costello album coming out of my computer speakers and asked if I'd heard that Elvis left his wife. (Apparently they'd been married for about twenty years. He left her for Diana Krall, a smooth jazz vocalist who sucks. Anyway, that's what I hear.) He went on to say that he was going to write Elvis a letter berating him for doing something so thoroughly lame.

Sometimes work is so awesome. _

Neal Stephenson didn't read anything from his new book, but he did answer a number of questions, some of which were interesting. I found myself staring at his skull and wondering how his brain could fit in there. (It's that the brain is so big -- his skull is skull-sized.)

I was surprised to see Moss and Julia there, which was silly. We went to a cafe for a bit and overheard bad poetry. They very kindly gave Sumana and I a ride back to my place and then hung out while the air mattress inflated.

Two more things: Sumana is a lovely guest, and Arthur Miller doesn't look one bit like Abraham Lincoln, despite what Marilyn Monroe and her biographers thought. _

All day I've been caught up in memories triggered by smells. This morning, while I was waiting to jaywalk, I smelled car exhaust and thought of Guadalajara. A woman I passed on the street was wearing a perfume that reminded me of preschool. Also, anytime someone uses Chamberlain's lotion I think of my grandmother. _

I think I discovered the secret to getting up slightly earlier than is absolutely necessary (and thereby giving myself enough time to, say, pack a lunch). It goes like this: Leave your bed, turn on all the lights, walk to the bathroom and splash cold water on your face until the pain susbsides. _

Anybody else see this about the interfaith, multiethnic alliance of religious leaders who joined hands to support the proposed "no gay marriage ever nopenopenope" amendment? It's nice to know that something can still bring people together.

The leader of the AME church said, "This is not about being anti-gay. It's about being for marriage as between a woman and a man. I would never, ever try to do anything negative against any segment of the population."

Because there's nothing negative about telling gay people that their lives are abnormal and sinful and therefore cannot be consecrated in the church. I see where she's coming from, I just wish she'd be honest and say, "It's not that I hate gay people, I just don't think they're fully human." _

Stegosaurus
Two words: spiked tail. "Oh, so you're sneaking up behind me to eat my delicious body? WHAM Spikes! For you! In your head!" Plus it had I-am-an-industrial-monster plates on its back, which while probably for conserving body heat or attracting mates, were impressive-looking. A
