More on Phoolan Devi: Here's Arundhati Roy talkin' some trash about the movie. I don't know, maybe she's right.

The one thing I have to say about that movie, however much it misrepresented Phoolan's life/made her look like a lil' pansy-ass, is that it made it very clear that in a patriarchal society you either get raped by your husband or raped by any other man who feels like it. Possibly both.

Which is not to say that our society is not in many ways patriarchal. We're just doing better than we used to, though not better enough. See "I Wanna Know What Love Is" by julie ruin. _

Here is an interesting article about Phoolan Devi. The writer includes Phoolan's criticisms of the movie, which I share. _

Last night Joanna and I watched Bandit Queen, a movie about Phoolan Devi. It was really striking, or maybe just heavy-handed, but I'd still argue that being hit over the head with feminism is better than being hit over the head with antifeminism. I might have more things to say about the film, but I'd have to think about it some more. For now I agree with most of this person's criticisms. _

Dear sweet jesus on a stick: The study of phat kicks for your balling pleasure.

Reminds me of a conversation I had with Damian (paraphrased below).

me: Damn! You get around! You a pimp.
Damian (annoyed): No I don't. That whole concept is just silly.
me: OK, do you want me to call you a playa or a balla?
Damian(decisively): Balla. _

Dudes, check out these amazing shoes! And the font at the top of the page! Awesome! It makes me sad (in a mono no aware kinda way) to think that those shoes are slowly failing to decompose in landfills somewhere, their beauty lost to the ravages of time. So transient, sneakers. Like the blossoms of the cherry tree.

Found it through this lviejournal community about sneakers. No, I don't have anything better to do with my time. _

A charming article about Sesame Street. "Well, we're very big on the alphabet, aren't we, Snuffy?"

An interesting interview with Bill Moyers, too.

Since they're both from Salon, you'll have to endure their day pass advertisement. So sad. _

The conceptual basis of modern fashion:
"It’s a feminine silhouette, but not feminine in the sense of Sartre."

One of the best quotes, from Roberto Cavalli: "With my show I love to make the people dream. With this dress I would like to tell you 'Come with me. We go together to the Oscars, we go together to the Grammys, we go together to the Music Awards. Come with me, come with me. I will be close to you. I will be on you!'"

Even what the models have to say isn't so funny. And let's hope those links work, hmm? _

An article comparing Spirited Away, which I saw this weekend, to the new Cowboy Bebop movie, which I'll probably see next weekend. The author disses Spirited Away, probably because she's a sucka MC, but she does confess to a fondness for the Radish Spirit. My recent life:

Sushi and a Miyazaki movie last night. (There wasn't a japanese theme, it just turned out that way.) Let me recommend Okina Sushi at 776 Arguello to any SF-based raw fish fans. The waiter was awesome and generously accomodated my request for extra ginger. Also it was cheap.

This afternoon I went thrifting in the Mission with Melissa. (She lives in Oakland but was really rockin' the mission hipster look today. I commented on it and she replied, "Yeah, I just pulled some stuff off my floor. Guess that's their secret.") Found my croquet dress at Clothes Contact (473 Valencia, between 15th and 16th -- awesome awesome awesome!). It needs minor repairs but is otherwise excellent, and strangely enough looks better if I don't wear a bra under it. Hm.

"Tiny Dancer" is a wonderful song. _

Just watched Jackass:The Movie which is not merely a fine cinematic achievement but also a great opportunity to gape at Johnny Knoxville. Although I must say he didn't take off his shirt nearly enough, but then he never does.

Best lines from the movie:

-Where are we going, Johnny?
-The hospital.
-Why the fuck are we going there?
