Remi's Bloglet

The bulk of my Level 1 show is up.

Here are the videos in the order they occured during the show. I have a small part in Scene Painting, and a larger one in World's Smartest. There is one bit missing, the 'Story Game', the title for which was 'Squid and Beaver Fall In Love'. I only mention this because it provides some context for one of the questions in World's Smartest.

Oscar Moment 1
Scene Painting
Oscar Moment 2
World's Smartest

It's a treat to be able to see an audience eye view of the show. What strikes me is how tightly controlled most of the scenes are. Ethan, our teacher, has total control over scene length and pacing, and does a good job of breaking up the Oscar Moments when the scenes bog. It also strikes me how we're clearly still very new at this, but despite that put on a pretty good show.

Clinton and Jason, my gaming buddies, are in the first three scenes (Clinton's the guy in the red t-shirt, Jason't in a blue-grey button-up). _

My Level 1 Improv class had its 'graduation' show tonight. It went well. Everyone had a good moment or two and it was really satisfying and awesome. I'm signed up for the Level 2 class and I'm looking forward to improv being a 'thing' in my life. The show was recorded, so I may have some video clips up sometime in the future. _

Also, I'm just gonna say that I'm really disappointed by how the abortion debate on Moss's blog turned out. Basically everyone's being cordial, and thoughtful, and Nate's saying ridiculous, hateful shit like, "women's bodies are like African dictators," and then everyone sits around trying to puzzle it out as if the message didn't matter, only the intent.

I fail to see how this a step up from shouting at one another. If anything, it's worse.

This is, of course, why I didn't get involved. _

It's incredibly dorky, but my gaming group has started doing a podcast before we start out game each week. I'm still working the kinks out, sound-wise, but I think it could turn into something interesting. Anyway, here's the rss feed link to the Durham Three Podcast.

EDIT: Now with show notes! With a little reading, what we're talking about won't be totally arcane. _

I saw the trailer for Tachiguishi Retsuden a couple weeks ago, and enjoyed its collagey-photoey-computery-berserk animation style, but not enough to link to it. However, I've now read a short plot synopsis, which, with its references to 'Fast Food Grifters' and culinary collapse, is even more berserk-sounding than the trailer. So I thought I'd share.

The movie is directed by Mamoru Oshii, who, despite directing my favorite long-form anime of all time, has a bit of a bad name in some corners of the blogmass. _

I need a new computer. I will be using it for heavy graphics and design work, including audio and possibly video. I'd like to buy a Mac, but this is probably the worst time to buy a new Apple machine, as the PowerPC line is going extinct and the Intel line doesn't have the Adobe programs I'm going to be doing the vast majority of my production on.

I'm not going to buy a G4 laptop, not enough power. My choices are either one of the Intel laptops OR a G5 tower. It's looking like I can get a G5 tower at a significant discount, on top of an educational discount, but I worry about obsolescence. My current G4 450 Sawtooth has lasted me a very solid 6 years with very few problems, and if I'm going to drop serious cash on a work machine again, I'd like to be able to expect the same amount of reliability.

What should I do? _

So Anne and I were talking, and I came up with a little graphic charting the development of musical taste. It seemed like an amusing thing to share.

Mine:
The Point sdtk->Fat Boys->Beatles->They Might Be Giants->Hey I actually like music!

Anne's:
tmbg -> mediocre mid 90s radio -> blur -> hey, i like music!
