Remi's Bloglet

Clarification: Comic Exhaustion 2001 is not a 24 hour comic Moss and I are doing together but rather we are both doing one at the same time. Others are encouraged to do their own 24 hour comics either this Saturday or in October. We will then all scan our comics and post them (hopefully collectively) on the web. Whew! _

Comic Exhaustion 2001 is our 24-hour comic challenge, in two parts. The truly hardcore will join us this weekend from 12 noon Saturday to 12 noon Sunday. Those of weaker constitutions can settle for the second round in October, to be announced shortly, complete with website. _

I just saw the Dismemberment Plan.
It was the best live show I've ever been to. Hands down. Even the opening acts kicked ass. More later, now sleep. I danced for two hours. Every part of my body is going to hurt tomorrow, but it was so worth it. _

Kaa, What an afternoon.

Went to see Amores Perros. Ride there was semi-eventful with a fight almost breaking out in front of me. I started a conversation with one of the guys before things heated up. We talked until I got off at the Dobie (the dorm/mall with the excellent movie theater).

I ate lunch and then saw the movie. Lemme tell you, if you like dogs you're either going to love this movie or hate it. I thought it was brilliantly paced and the acting was top notch. However, the tone is definitely one of tragedy. It's not a slide-into-Hades type of movie, but the movie makes it clear from the beginning that we're not getting many happy endings. It's not all doom and gloom though, and it's the cathartic moments of happiness or release that really got to me. Anyway, definitely see the movie, it's got thugs, assasins, and supermodels. What more could one ask for? How about a kinetic editing style that looks nothing like MTV? Yay! At last! Howabout a nonlinear story that doesn't feel like Pulp Fiction or gimmicky? Huzzah!

Anyway, after feeling like I had just gotten hit by a brick (I had tears in my eyes) by the movie, I went out and tried to catch the bus. I got onto one of the expresses, which cost a dollar. The driver didn't tell me this until after I put 50 cents in. I only had another 25 cents, but a very nice girl with a basketball gave me a quarter. I thanked her and sat down. We both got off at the same stop, but she started heading the wrong way down the street. I said so and she thanked me. We started talking. Her name was Keitha and she was attending St. Edwards ("St. Ed's") on a basketball scholarship. She had transferred from (I think) West Texas State a year before and was alone in Austin now that the school year had ended and she had to move into the dorms for summer session. She was a photography major and had moved to Texas from L.A. because "there was nothing left for me in Watts." We talked about public transportation and art for a bit and then she got on the bus and left.

It was a nice change from the usual freakshow on the bus. _

I know I'm not as close to the current sophomore class as Moss is, but I feel I know most of you all pretty well. I wish that tutors would just trust in students to know when it's time to leave. Seems to work better than disenabling. If we can't decide whether or not to stay, a pretty basic form of self-knowledge, what good is our Program? _

For Moss's amusement:
The conversation on the Mummy mostly came from my friend Heidi (who directed me in Measure for Measure and graduated that year). It was mostly a comparison between the two movies and how O'Connells character didn't really fulfill the role of 'Warrior of God' yet. Also mentioned was the Love of Imhotep and Anack Su Namun and that it was supposed to be dark and against the Gods, but ultimately it was a cop-out. Some stuff about O'connell having to meet (and probably defeat) his father. Mostly conjecture about how the movie could have been better (Evie returns in the next movie, instead of being resurrected in the current one) and what the next movie might be like (such as the whole father thing). Pretty neat. I haven't talked to Heidi in a while, so it's pretty cool. Most of the above is hers. I admit now that my response was kind of lame.

I have set up my bloglet so that when I want to look at it (and thus other people's bloglets) I must write a message first. Sure it's just linking to the 'add' page, just a cheap psychological trick, but I can usually force myself not to circumvent such things. Sort of like setting my clock an hour and twenty minutes ahead so that when I wake up at 9 I can get to work at 9. Magic! _

I'm happy/I'm feeling glad/I got sunshine/in a bag/I feel useless/but not for long/my future/is coming on

I am currently listening to my Gorrilaz CD. They're Blur meets cartoon bands at a rap concert. Damon Albarn, blur's lead singer, Dan the Automator (maker of the music of Dr. Octagon, one of my favorite rap albums of all time), Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz (Talking Heads rhythm section, or 'the stupid ones' as I like to call them), Del Tha Funky Homosapien, and Miho Hatori (Cibo Matto) all contribute. The guy who drew tank girl does all the art. They have a flash-o-riffic website that will make you want to hear what their music is like.

Now you know why I don't write reviews for pitchfork _

People are huzzahing me (well, only Moss and Neil), I like being huzzahed.
This reminds me how much I miss Baron Munchausen. There's a game called Ever After or something. It's played with cards and you're supposed to tell a story with the plot point cards in your hand. Sort of like a more rules oriented Baron. I was in a (German-style) boardgame store and saw it and asked about it (Ever After) and the person said, "Oh that's the sort of game that liberal arts people play," in a distinctly negative tone.

Even though that was in Raleigh, that engineer-bias for structure definitely exists in the Austin boardgame community. Or, more likely, I've just been too shy to ask people to play a long and boisterous game with no clear winner...or goal (other than telling a good story). _

Ha Hai! My bloglet is up and running! I spent all yesterday re-reading the talking heads biography and taking baths.

Liz is sad, I love her, and wish I could be with her. I will tell her about the bloglet and she will read this, maybe that will help in a small way.

I need to get out of the house.
