Open letters:

Dear UPS Man,

Please hurry and bring Moss's vest so that I may leave the apartment. Pretty please? With sugar on top?

Sincerely,

Stir Crazy Julia --Thank you!

Dear Brain,

Why, for the love of all that is non-annoying do you choose to continually plague me with the song "Mellow Yellow"? And no, "Inagadadavida" is not better. Kindly desist.

Your Conscious Self

Dear Dresses,

OMG PLEASE arrive tomorrow. It is your LAST chance if I am going to wear one of you to croquet. Look, I am getting desperate enough to use CAPSLOCK. Are you happy now dresses? ARE you?

To do:

*Shower

*Eat Oatmeal.

*100 word story for Cleverly Named Challenge #5 Very silly indeed.

*Hoop Did a few yoga poses after because I felt like it, and as I was staring upward, a hawk flew over.

*30 minutes on Fifty Photographs stuff

*Clean Bathroom hmm, we seem to be out of glass cleaner.

*Letter writing Miss Nehring.

*Tidy living room

*More Fifty Photographs work

*Lunch Pasta with sauce! (you have to yell it like they used to at the St. John's dining hall).

*Figure out rest of clothes to pack

Letter writing/prize package making Letter to L. and prizes to Aarika sent, prizes to Martin, Mira, Tanya arranged for distribution at croquet.

*Vacuum

*Walk: 10 10 10 I got my pace up a bit during the middle ten like I was supposed to, but I had to fight to keep it up for that whole ten minutes. I'm tired and distressed today. Blah.

*Post letters/prizes Need to post Miss Nehring's tomorrow. Was too late to get to the post office intime to have them do the whole customs form thing.

To do:

*Eat Was going to have oatmeal, but had leftover mac & cheese with extra yogurt mixed in instead.

*Walk: easy 30 minutes Kept having to slow myself down. The tendency is to try to push harder.

*E-mail L. about next week

*Gather sheets and towels and put them in washer Threw in a couple of socks for good measure.

*Post to commune blog about Africa packages

*Eat I did have a leftover bit of pizza and a cookie. That counts, right?

*Switch sheets and towels to dryer

*Work on getting second story polished for forty-five minutes while sheets and towels dry

*Retrieve sheets and towels Oh, I forgot to transfer the lint from my pocket to the trash. I love how even when there is not a necessary item like a trash bin in the laundry room, the resident Jehovah's Witness makes sure it's stocked with the Awake! magazine.

*Make bed As with every time I put fresh sheets on the bed, I can't help but notice just how badly we need a new mattress pad. This one is old and it won't stay in place, bunches up under the sheets when you move and then the lumps dig into you when you sleep. I wonder when we'll get around to actually doing something about this instead of merely complaining.

*Cleverly Named mod stuff Keeping a writing community organized is much more time-consuming than it might first appear.

*Dishes

*Begin packing It's a tricky business. I don't want to pack anything I still plan to wear, and I also can't tell exactly what I should be briging. Is it going to be hot like last year? Or rainy like the weathermen seem to think? In any case, have packed two dresses for Tori to try, and should be set for socks and pyjamas. I really really hope the dresses I ordered arrive tomorrow. Getting anxious.

*Write words for buttons Home, Contents, Contributors, About, Previous, Next. Hands are cramped now. Attempt at header turned out shaky. Time for a break.

*Go out someplace and write letters

Again, this is ambitious, but doable. _

Madre called to say that apparently cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketers soon. If you don't want telemarketers to call you on your cell phone... calls, which cost you money, I might add (or at least cost some of your allotted minutes), you can call the national do not call list from your cell phone at 1-888-382-1222. It's automated, so you don't even have to talk to anyone. _

Finally have hard copies of all the photos on the cardstock. So exciting. Some of them make me smile every time I see them, even if I have looked at them all intently dozens of times in the past. Others still take my breath away. Not for long, just for a second, but still. A pity that printing them as 4x6s meant the printers cutting or distorting some of them in odd ways. Now to take a bit of a walk and stretch out my cramped muscles. I think I'll take this opportunity to buy some blank index cards (and a mocha Frappuccino) before getting back to work. _

Now that we've wasted the bulk of the morning on messed up dreams and blog-reading, how about a to do list?

*Gather laundry and put in washer

*Walk: economy 6x1 It's amazing how much of a workout a half hour of walking can really be. I just have to remember that I will get better and faster and build up endurance and all that so long as I don't slack off or push too hard. Impatience and vanity are the biggest stumbling blocks.

*Switch laundry to dryer Who stole the trash can from the laundry room? I had to carry someone else's lint back to our apartment to dispose of it. Grumble. Also, while hanging two of Moss's newer shirts to dry, I caught myself singing, "We'll need a lint-brush, the kind with teeth..."

*Shower So nice to feel clean.

*Eat I heart Annie's shells and cheddar with yogurt in so much.

*Mount photos on cardstock Two hours later... I think I need a walk and a yummy, coffee-flavored, frozen treat now.

*Remove laundry from dryer Yay, the dryer didn't eat any of my fun socks!

*Fold laundry

*Get required text in polished form Wellthat's the first story (and the contriubutors and about pages) polished up anyway. I'll work on a couple others tomorrow.

*Photo of photos I have to say I like the way this is shaping up.

*Sketch of front page for Moss verbal description with gestures is close enough.

This is doable. This is done! So much awesome. Now to bed and sleep before attacking a brand new to do list tomorrow. _

Apparently in a sleeping state I consistently don't know the name for water. When I was younger, probably about 14, I demanded that my mother bring me "some of that insecta stuff," and got very exasperated when she didn't know what I meant. Eventually I asked for a glass of the insecta stuff and she asked if I meant water, to which I replied in a very short tone, "That's what I said!" It's been a favorite family story ever since, but I didn't know it would become a running theme.

So, now that the backstory is out of the way, last night I fell asleep, and Moss herded me into bed and turned out all the lights and all that good stuff, and then when we were both settled in bed I said, "Could you bring me some light from the other room if it's still on?" Moss was understandably confused, so I asked again, this time making drinking motions with my hand.

Moss left and came back a minute later with a glass of water. "I brought you some of that insecta stuff," he said, and I thanked him as if that was clearly a natural name for water, drank a bit of it, and fell back into a deeper sleep.

This morning I called my mother to tell her the story. I got as far as, "Could you bring me some light from the other room..." when she stopped me and said, "Oh yeah, just like the insecta stuff!" _

So, in the audio commentary for Can't Hardly Wait (yes, it's high school movie week over here, why do you ask?) Seth Green totally speaks with a really horrid British accent for the first fifteen minutes. Just, you know, for the hell of it. This further confirms the impression I've always had that Seth Green would be really fun to hang out with. _

To follow up on Moss's post, an account of the incident at Santa Rosa Junior College from a more personal standpoint appears here, complete with the text of the flyers that students posted to the teachers' doors.

Here are the facts: 1) The flyers were posted anonymously (signed by "anonymous students of the SRJC"). 2) The postings included red stars and a section of the California education code prohibiting communist indoctrination. 3) The section of the education code in question was apparently added in the fifties, and defines communism as "...a political theory that the presently existing form of government of the United States or of this state should be changed, by force, violence, or other unconstitutional means, to a totalitarian dictatorship which is based on the principles of communism as expounded by Marx, Lenin, and Stalin."

The problem here as I see it is twofold. First , the education code clearly states that the forbidden communist indoctrination promotes violence, foreceful overthrow of the government, and unconstitutional activities. By posting red stars on professors' doors along with this text, and especially by doing it anonymously, Molly McPherson and Danielle Carter (the president and secretary of the JC's College Republicans club who later came forward as the perpetrators) don't seem to be trying to start a dialogue, as they suggest. If a dialogue is what McPherson was after, why post anonymously, and why not state exactly the problems she and her fellow studens had with their courses instead of rashly accusing their profs of inciting violent rebellion?

Second, the personal account above points to two websites groups like McPherson's use as resources The California College Republicans page and Students for Academic Freedom. While the first account is quick to cast stones, I'll give these groups the respect they deserve. They appear to be doing nothing illegal or violent. SAF has several articles like this one by David Horowitz about what they see as the problem of too little academic diversity. Regardless of whether my opinions match theirs, I hold that they are free to have these opinions, and to publish essays about them on the internet. Whether or not I find it disturbing that they are encouraging students to report on their professors' voting records is irrelevant. However, while the official postitions of these organizations may promote diversity and interest in unbiased education, it's worth noting that the forums often include threads with titles like How to Kick Liberal Groups Off Campus 101, which (though this thread is devoid of any substance) show that at least some of the members of these groups are less concerned with fostering diversity than they are with establishing their opinions as the dominant and/or only opinions. _

Though I talk in my sleep fairly often, before last night I think the most amusing thing I had said to Moss in such a state was, "Tomorrow you may receive a phone call from a pencil." That was certainly amusing and all, but this morning I turned on the computer to find the following exchange, which Moss saw fit to get out of bed in the middle of the night and type up for posterity:

"Are you arranging yourself?"

"Arranging myself? What?"

"With 37 minutes, and some idea of life and liberty to be quoted?" _

T.I.A.I.L.W. Julie of Julie's Tacky Treasures. This woman understands the spirit of glorification of the tasteless. I found her site by checking out one of the google searches listed in my own referral logs. Turns out I rank second for husband kinky goodwill store, while Julie's Mugs I'll Never Drink Out Of page (not worksafe) comes in first. I don't know if I have ever been so happy to have checked out a weird google search from my stats page before. Ever. I confess I am still terribly curious about (yet also afraid to find out) what the person who originally searched for that particular combination of words hoped to find, though. _
