Three things:

* If I ever start a prog rock band, I will call it Stereocilia.

* Yesterday I managed to accidentally break a dozen eggs. When most people accidentally break a dozen eggs, it goes something like this: They buy a dozen eggs, accidentally drop the carton, and say, "Oh, man! I just broke a dozen eggs." But no. I bought a dozen eggs, put them on my scooter, safely scooted down the hill, went into a store, and while waiting in line, lost my grip on the handles and dropped the scooter on the floor. But that only broke four eggs! The other eight were fine. So I brought them home, washed off the goop from the broken eggs, and put them safely in the fridge. Several hours later, I decide to make a spanish tortilla for dinner, so I open the fridge door, reach in, pull out the egg carton, AND DROP IT ON THE FLOOR, INSTANTLY BREAKING THE OTHER EIGHT EGGS. Now that's talent, folks.

* Today I was in a courtroom and I overheard one cop say to another cop something that my brain perceived as "Hey, did you get a copy of The Prince?" I got all excited. Machiavellian nerd cops! And then realized that the sentence had actually been "Hey, did you get a copy of the prints?" _

Day 30 - Your favorite song at this time last year

This wraps up the 30-day song meme. It was really fun! I'll see if I can keep the blogging momentum up, now that I've primed the pump a little. _

Day 29 - A song from your childhood

I have a vivid memory of singing this entire song in the back seat of the car during a long road trip. Possibly more than once. In a row. My parents are saints. Tomorrow: Your favorite song at this time last year. _

Day 28 - A song that makes you feel guilty

Like many children of the '80s, I find songs about nuclear war cathartic. And hilarious. And oddly nostalgic. Almost... Comforting. This song in particular makes me laugh my ass off, sing along lustily, then suddenly stop short, remember all my childhood nightmares -- including that time I watched the most depressing cartoon ever made -- and realize that I'm a horrible, vile person whose flippant irreverence has most likely sealed my fate and brought down fiery destruction on everyone I love. Oh, brain. Tomorrow: A song from your childhood. _

Day 26 - A song that you can play on an instrument

This isn't me, needless to say. It's Isaac Stern. But I can play this. Well, I could play this. In high school. On both violin and bassoon. (Not at the same time. I did this thing for District Music Festival where I played the first movement of Bach's Violin Concerto on violin, second movement on trumpet, and third movement on bassoon. I got Superiors on the first two and was allowed to go on to State Music Festival, but only got Excellent on the third one, so I didn't get to go for the hat trick. Bassoon is hard, yo.) I probably couldn't on either anymore; I'm horribly rusty. It's great, though, ain't it? Tomorrow: A song that you wish you could play. _

Day 24 - A song that you want to play at your funeral

Huh. K. suggested this song, which is perfect, but I can't find a video of it on YouTube. So it's going to have to be this one:

Yep, more Leonard Cohen. Maybe it's presumptuous of me; anyone who's heard me sing knows I'm no nightingale. It was originally written in memory of a singer named Carl Anderson. But it's so lovely, and both sad and happy, and it doesn't despair -- but it doesn't tell any lies either. And, damnit, if I have to die, I want to be sent off with a jew's harp solo. Tomorrow: A song that makes you laugh. _

Day 22 - A song that you listen to when you're sad

I know this song has been on multiple blogswaps and pretty much everyone knows it backwards and forwards, but it's just so perfect. And it's one of those sad songs that I can only really listen to when I'm sad, because otherwise it's just too devastating. But when I am sad, it's comforting. Funny how that works. Bonus video: The Magnetic Fields again, describing this phenomenon beautifully:

But Billie Holiday's music (with a few lightweight exceptions) is just about all too devastating. When she sings, she drags me down with her. Dusty has enough hope in her voice to keep me steady. Tomorrow: A song that you want to play played at your wedding. _

Day 20 - A song that you listen to when you're angry

This might be a weird song for a pretty well-off freelancer to listen to, but the sentiment applies to a lot of things, and being angry in solidarity with people who are getting screwed worse is better than just being aloof and bitter and cynical.

Day 19 - A song from your favorite album

Ah, yes. Finally the Leonard Cohen. Probably not the last you'll see of him, either. From New Skin for the Old Ceremony, which, if it isn't my absolute favorite album, has few enough rivals that I couldn't think of them after 10 minutes of scrolling through my mp3 collection. Tomorrow: A song that you listen to when you're angry. _

Day 17 - A song that you hear often on the radio

I don't really listen to the radio. I thought that the way to answer this would be to use the theme song of one of the podcasts I listen to a lot, but K. said that the prompt probably meant stuff that I hear ambiently without putting on deliberately. For some reason, this song has been following me around lately. I guess it's in pretty heavy rotation in most of your in-store muzak mixes, but I seem to hear it all the time -- in the local grocery store, the fancy swanky grocery store downtown, the drugstore... Just all over the place. It's pretty bad, especially in muzak form, but it always makes me think of that time that Moss and Julia sang it at karaoke in Missoula's only gay bar. They sang it with special lyrics of Moss's invention, involving ray guns and possibly killer robots? I need to ask for an encore sometime. Anyway, it's one of my favorite memories, so every time it comes on I start grinning in spite of myself. Tomorrow: A song that you wish you heard on the radio. _

Bleh, Star Wars. I just cannot be arsed to give two figs about Star Wars. And only thing I care less about than Star Wars is sports cars; yet this song amuses and delights me every time. Why? I don't understand it myself. I'm a hunter for hire with no plans to retire, and all the sucka MCs can call me sire! Tomorrow: A song that describes you _
