Bloglet, the gentleman's mock turtle soup --
Moss made it sweeter than myrrh ash and dhoup

I know y'all are probably bored to death of my hard drive woes by now, but I'm kind of stumped, and maybe I'm overlooking something obvious. So after I started getting the "hard drive failure imminent" messages (which I'm still getting after 20 or more successful boot-ups), I went out and bought a 200-gig drive from Staples for $40 after rebate (which kind of blows my tiny little mind. I mean, 200 gig! For $40! Remember when it was 500 for $900?) and tried to install it. That's when I discovered that a) my old drive was a SATA, b) the new drive was an ATA, and c) while I have four SATA slots, I have only one IDE slot, and both of my CD-ROMs were currently using it. I sent away to Hong Kong for an adaptor that would allow me to use the new drive with one of the SATA slots, and waited. It arrived, and after a lot of silly jumper cable drama I finally got the new drive recognized (though only when it's connected to the IDE port; the adaptor doesn't seem to work with either the hard drive or the CD-ROMs. Oh well; it was only $7 including shipping). I cloned my old drive to it last night. So yay.

This morning I wake up to a blank, unresponsive screen (the old drive has been freezing up and BSODing me pretty much every time I leave it unattended for more than a couple minutes, though strangely it seems to work fine when I'm actually using it), but after rebooting the new drive is recognized in windows, I get an "boot drive transfer successful" message, and all my files are there. Problem is, I can't seem to boot to it. When I try, I just get that black screen with blinking cursor that you get right before the Windows logo when booting up XP, but it never gets on with it. No error message or anything; it just stays there, veekink und bleenkink und drivink me sane! If I boot up to the old drive instead, I get the "hard drive failure imminent" message, but above that I can read in the S.M.A.R.T. dialogue "[old drive] Status: BAD", "[new drive] Status: OK". Well, that's encouraging, and I'm glad my data is safe, but if the old drive goes kablooey before I can figure out how to boot up to the new drive, I don't see how it's going to do me much good. Advice? _

Her: ( singing ) You make me feel... you make me feel... you make me feel like an amorous llama.
Me: Really?
Her: Yes.
Me: Can I blog that?
Her: No.
Me: Why not?
Her: I have a reputation to uphold.
Me: For not feeling like an amorous llama?
Her: Yes.
Me: Humph.
Her: No, not a camel. A llama. Oh, okay, fine. Blog it if you want. But I'd rather you didn't.
Me: Woo-hoo! _

I took a half-day off work today and went into school to take a test. Failed by 10 errors. I have three more regular classes to pass three 225 WPM Q&A tests, and might possibly get one or two extra chances on a Thursday night or Friday morning if the stars are right and I take another half-day off. If I pass all three tests by March 16th (the day before my 26th birthday), all will be well and I'll have finished court reporting school in 19 months. If not, I get to pay $400 for another three (or maybe four or five) tests. If I still don't finish in that time, I'm forced to pay up through the end of May. Since each month's tuition is about half of my discretionary monthly income, I intend to be doing some serious practicing this weekend. _

"Hard Drive Failure Imminent"

Not really words you want to see. About two-thirds done backing up my music collection. Wish me luck. _

Computer went down again. Did about six failed non-destructive restores and then finally one that took. Am now offloading entire music collection to old NJB3 (bless it) and thence to laptop. After that I don't care what happens to this hard drive; I'll scrub it 'til its toes tingle, if that's what it wants. But yay for not losing 53 gigs of mp3s! _

Took the first half of the day off. Drank warm Goatveltine and made spinach-Jarlsberg omelets, then trudged out into the snow to work. All is mellow. Am very, very happy. _

For various reasons I've had a fair amount of guiltless free time at work lately, but instead of using it to practice steno and build my dictionary (still hovering at just under 45,000 words), I've been using it to veg out on the internet and read fun but trashy novels about psychokinetic goblins and proto-horses with claws. I've been getting some work done on the weekends, and I think I comported myself fairly well with the CART provider on Monday (I'll be going back every other week until I finish school, at which point I aim to rearrange my work schedule a bit and sit in more often) but I still feel the chill hand of slackitude closing around me. When I get home in the evenings, it's usually to eat dinner, scruffle the girl, and go to bed, with occasional forays into dishwashing or showering. What I've been getting the urge to do, though, is go out and work in public. I don't know what the appeal is, but it seems to be rooted deep. I went to alt.coffee once and had the nicest time. Something about all those strangers intent on their work in the same room stimulates you to go along. I mean, why do people work in coffee shops? My brother has always done it. J.K. Rowling constantly laments the impossibility of doing it in peace these days. At home I can steno in bed, naked-- why should I have the urge to do it clothed in a chair and pay for the privilege? I dunno if it's the thrill of being seen without having to interact ('cause Castrolux really is kickass-looking, if I do say so myself) or the guilty-conscience factor or what. Anyway, I may have to do it one of these days, just to scratch the itch. _
