On the marquee of the old Front Street Theater, now abandoned, where the Missoula Children's Theater used to hold their classes and plays (I was in thirteen of 'em, from age 4 to age 14, and they were all bloody wonderful), someone has put up a message in quasi-1337speak letters and numbers:

"W3T GHOSTS F3AR W3T LI3S"

(That's more-or-less the transliteration. I didn't actually write it down, so I have the feeling there are some number substitutions I'm forgetting.)

It's been there for more than a year. What does it mean? _

If this is the source of the story of Atlantis, I sure would not be looking for that place based upon this writing.

That's pretty goddamn amusing. I was actually looking for information on Mr. or Mrs. Kalkavage's affiliation with that one intensive summer (blargh, was it Greek or Latin?) course. I'm very vague on the whole thing, but I know there was some connection. Can any of you remember? _

Yet another reason I love my tattoo: I fancy it makes my back look like an Albrecht Dürer engraving. Wow. That couldn't have been any more pretentious if I'd tried. Oh well. It's still true, damnit. _

Medical clearance usually takes four to six weeks from the time we receive your completed examination forms.

It's been more than ten weeks. They said it sometimes takes longer if you're leaving after the peak period (which ends in July; I'm supposed to be leaving in August), because all those other people have priority. But holy hell. It's not as if I have ANY MEDICAL PROBLEMS, LIKE, AT ALL. Seriously. I got a clean bill of friggin' health. Sooo... either they've put my folder aside and haven't looked at it yet, they've lost it or forgotten about it altogether, or they're engaged in exhaustive debate over whether someone with a "left lumbar tattoo -- four way palindrome" should be allowed to represent the United States abroad. _

I don't know if it's such a good idea to be reading two different stories about boat voyages simultaneously. It's a little... disorienting.

I love my ma and all, but there's something awfully nice about only having to share the house with a half-deaf old loner who's up all hours of the night. I can do exactly as I please, and make exactly as much noise as I want to while doing it. _
