Bloglet - A tasty morsel of web goodness every time I log in.

Well, one of them's got it, anyway. That's encouraging. Congratulations Andrew!

Am I allowed to like both the new Ursula K. Le Guin and the old Ursula K. Le Guin? I've always sort of wondered.

What is happening to my skin? Where is the protection that I needed? Air can hurt you too. Some people say not to worry about the air. Some people never had experience with air.

There, now I've sent out the instructions. Lets see how many utterly confused messages I get back from people who couldn't follow them. I certainly wouldn't have been able to follow those instructions.

I've got to fix this copy of telnet. When I hit CTRL-C, I mean for the program I'm running remotely to stop, not for telnet to stop. So when telnet stops, that's Bad.

I'm not sure if I've mentioned www.transitinfo.org before--they list schedules for SF Bay Area public transportation, and I'm about to test out their travel planner.

I hate it when modems hang up for no good reason. In fact, I hate modems. But it won't be TOO terribly long until DSL.

Eventually, I noticed that I was typing [ome instead of pine so often that I might as well just alias the one to the other. It's not like I'd ever type [ome when I meant something else. If this confuses you, look at your keyboard for a few minutes.

If you're running Linux on an Alpha and you need a console AIM client, caim seems to be the one to use. I, at least, couldn't get the others to compile.

For some time, I've been using "This is a test of the emergency broadcast system." as a sample sentence for testing things out. It isn't really long enough to work when repeated again and again, it doesn't use every letter of the alphavbet, it doesn't look all that typical as a sentence, it, really, has not much of anything to recommend it. But there it is.

When one is given a flight itinerary, with times and prices and everything, one tends to assume that the computer is smart enough to give one one that is actually available.

It doesn't seem like it would be so hard either for Microsoft to make a properly vt102 compatible telnet client for Windows, or for anyone to make a termcap entry that could recognize and properly-deal-with Microsoft Telnet.

www.cheaptickets.com did indeed find cheap air tickets, but we found a much better deal on rental cars through www.travelocity.com.

The awkward thing about rebuilding your kernel, especially from pre-release sources, is that you can never be quite sure it's going to work, which, especially if your on a slower computer that takes a while to compile it (okay, a couple of hours at least), is a bit of a problem. Especially if it reports an error in the middle of compiling, and then seems to do all right when you restart it. Ah well, here's hoping. At least I've got one that already works.

My father, last week, found a copy of the OED for me at the flea market. Great condition. Missing it's magnifying glass, though (the compact edition, obviously). Then today I found a magnifying glass. So it's all good.

The nice thing about records is, they've got really good sound quality (though you have to be careful not to damage them), while still being really cheap. Also they're more aesthetic than CDs.

Just saw Sunshine. Good movie overall, I think, but dreadfully tedious in places... they could have cut at least an hour off of it.

www.yahoo.com - because I'm not sure I had a link to it anywhere before, and without a link to Yahoo, how do you know it's really a web page?

Oddly, I find that with the new look for my bloglet, I am also tempted to write longer entries. Albeit, most of these entries have been about the bloglet itself, so it may just be the novelty of it all, but there is something about knowing it has that nice big page layout around it. In other news, my father's bookstore just got a copy of Kernighan and Ritchie's The C Programming Language, one of the few real classics in the field.

Done. And just for good measure, I taught it to distinguish between & used to mean an ampersand, and & used as part of an html character entity like " (which stands for ").

Ha! I've figured out what was going wrong with Mirabai's page ( www.sjca.edu/~cnidarae ). The quotation marks were confusing the browser, because they weren't proper html character entities. I'm adding a fix to 2.0 right away.

Here it is: the first ever post to my new bloglet through the automatic login prompt (as opposed to the many, many posts to my old). And of course, I've gone and wasted it on something silly and self-referential. I tell you, these hacker types are all the same.
