It took me about 75 minutes to vote this morning. I arrived just after 6:30, and was out by 7:50. I was a litte late to work, but I think it was worth it.

The line went down and around the block, and while it didn't get longer while I was there, it didn't get shorter either. Everyone was in good spirits and patient, and the poll workers were working hard to get everyone through as quickly as possible.

There are evidently more people with last names beginning L-R than other letters, because on several occasions, a poll worker came out and called people with names A-G to the front. When I got closer, they called S-Z, so that was lucky for me.

I think its going to be a historic day, and I'm pretty hapy about that. _

Tonight, I went with a coworker to dinner, and then a play. Dinner was....alright. The food was fine, however, it took over an hour between the time we placed our order and the time we got our order (for the appetizer. I think the entree was around an hour). I had a burger, which was ok, but the fries all sorts of sucked. Then we went to see The Lion King and it was awesome. I love Julie Taymore and I love good puppets, and I love musicals, so all in all, a smash hit. Now I have to shower and go to bed, so I can get up in the morning and try to slip into the polls before work. Failing that, I anticipate a long, long line after work tomorrow evening. _

Uh-oh. I think McCain is going to win. Check out Dolly's costume, even as we speak, a wave of cutesy goodwill toward Sarah Palin is being spread through our nation's newspapers. How can Obama hope to compete with the awesome power of The Family Circus? _

We had two performances of a reader's theater tonight and last night, and two more tomorrow and Thursday. Tomorrow I have to be at the highschool, MCing a show for the improv team. Its halloween themed, and I have to dress up as someone. Since we've been doing mime, and I have all the make up, I think I'm going to dress as Marcel Marceau. The other theater teacher will at least appreciate it. Performances are always great, but they are a big eater of spoons. Its 8 here, and I have things which must be done, which may not get done because I've decided that I need clean clothes more than I need to work on my own homework. Blah. _

Looking at the TeachNYC website, it seems that teachers must search individual schools in New York for positions, rather than having a central clearing house of all open positions. I don't know who's brilliant idea that is, but it is annoying, because it makes the job search that much harder. _

Without the tracker, and without comments, I'm feeling very lonely out here. You all could be reading, or not, and I'd never know. I think that may be why I haven't been blogging, although blogging tends to be periodic in any case. I was also thinking that the blogmass are some of my best friends, if defined as people I can talk to about anything, and have kept in contact with. I can't remember the last time I did something with someone in Kansas City I wasn't related to. I'm feeling fairly isolated here. _

Its always nice to have your own knowledge and abilities validated. I led a class today on debate that I was not entirely prepared for, but as I looked over the material this evening, I noticed that I had touched on many of the introductory points without evening realizing it. I am exhausted, and likely to remain so for some time. I was thinking about spoons on the way home from work today, and I wonder, while I probably have more spoons than the people who have to think about spoons daily, I should probably be more cognizant of how I'm spending them. _

My first parent I actually had to do something for. I've had three this evening, which represents, I think, probably half of everyone I'll get. That's 10% of my parents right there. Two were no problem, good kids, whole nine yards, then, the third, and I had to scramble to assure her everything is all right. Need to talk to the other teacher make sure I'm doing everything correctly. _

The theater dept. was selling cookie dough as a fundraiser this year, and I bought some. It arrived today, and tonight, when I got home, I threw some on a pan and tossed them into the oven. Its amazingly nice to have fresh cookies without having to go through the hassle of making cookies. Very nice indeed. The cookies weren't bad, either. _

Today in Educator History: Henry Barnard (1811-1900) created the public school systems in Connecticut, Wisconsin and Rhode Island. A graduate of Yale, Barnard believed in practical education, teaching the public marketable skills like bookkeeping, mechanics, and surveying. In 185, Barnard became the president of St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland. _

Parent Teacher conferences are fairly wierd as a student teacher. On the one hand, I'm the one in the classroom day to day with the students. On the other hand, I didn't have them for the first several weeks of the semester, so the teacher needs to be there to explain grades. In a word, awkward. _

I ran over a squirrel yesterday. I was driving down the street, and there was a rattling bump. And then, in my rear-view mirror, I saw a squirrel dash our from where my car had been moments before. I hope I didn't rattle its little squirrel brain too much, although, with a squirrel, you never can tell. _

They were, in fact, sitting on my desk at school, so that worked out. I just got home, though, so a very long day. Fortunately, I got my grades updated for tomorrow. Unfortunately, I don't know if I managed to get them sent to the grade card printery. I should probably get some progress reports printed for tomorrow, so people have an idea of why they're getting the grades they're getting. Conferences next week. FUN! _
