I went to this on Friday night and was really kinda impressed. Well, I couldn't really get behind the chick composer's twelve tone stuff, and the other dude was mostly quite good, though he had his off-moments, but my roommate's work was frankly stunning -- this coming from someone who generally can't stand this stuff -- and all the musicians were excellent. Young kids with studly resumes, and who knows how many of 'em will make it professionally, but it was art, damnit. I think there's something about playing a piece of new music for a close audience of about 50 people that makes you inject something bolder and more personal into the performance than you could dare to do with the old warhorses. "Lola", Patrick's piece for Pierrot ensemble, had plenty of that modern-era dissonance that usually stops up all the passages between my ears and my pleasure centers, but somehow it had enough internal coherence and overarching sense that I was able to shift my sensibilities just enough to hear it as it was meant to be heard. Really something. _

Ok, so I have an actual concrete thesis -- plus six primary and two secondary texts to support it -- eleven days before the paper is due. This is an encouraging development.

Also, I suppose it's slightly premature, seing as I have five hours of the night still left to go, but I'm going to tentatively declare Operation: 81-Hour Workweek a success. Tomorrow, a day off (a day off!) and then the launch of Operation: 58-hour Workweek, which can't but seem a little anticlimactic in comparison. _

Ok, so these two quarks are hanging out in a leather bar, and the one quark says to the other quark, "Hey, stud. Are you a top or a bottom?" _

One balmy weekend morning --

[murmured discussion of certain undisclosable architectural details]
Me: Mmmm... I love your flying buttresses.
Her: Yes, but how do you feel about my Boutros-Boutros Ghali?
Me: {investigates} Also very fine. Very, very fine.
Her: Glad to hear it. But I'm afraid I'll need to get up and have some Kofi Annan. _

Oh, also -- La Clemenza di Tito? Bloody wonderful. Am going to write a long thorough essay about just why it kicks so much ass one of these days, but it may take a while to get everything arranged properly in my head. Still. Mmmph! _

Dude. Dude dude dude. I got a new job. It's only 20 to 30 hours a week, so I'll have to find something else to supplement it, but if I turn out to be any good, I'll be making the same amount of money per hour as now, and I WON'T HAVE TO WORK NIGHTS ANYMORE!

I start training tomorrow. It's media transcription -- interviews, documentaries, news shows, that sort of thing -- and it sounds freakin' perfect, from where I'm sitting. I can type fast for a long time without getting tired, I can spell and punctuate and shiz, I like having my fingers occupied while my ears are busy, and the tapes themselves may even turn out to be sort of interesting once in a while. Plus, they pay by the page, so the better I am at it, the more spondoolik I end up with. And it's a field I've considered hanging out in for a while, unlike health care, so it's just as well I'm getting some experience at it. Chiz chiz all round.

I was worried that my current job would keep me in a vice grip and I'd have to work both of them through June, but I just got the new schedule and discovered to my delight that I'm working six days this week, four days next week, two days the week after, and one day each of the two subsequent weeks, going up to June 1st, after which I'm released altogether. So excited I could plotz.

K.'s mom gave me keys to their apartment last night. Damn. I mean, just... damn.

This morning I saw a chick with an armadillo handbag and a high school band from Turtle Lake, Wisconsin. They were pretty terrible. And so many blonde kids, eek! Made me a little nostalgic for my former bandfagging days, though. But lordy we would've whipped the tar out of those sorry specimens. Yeah, shut up, passing smirking Juilliard wanker. It ain't easy tootling your heart out in bumblefuck.

I need, somehow, to get tickets to:

The Podles Orfeo (May 2nd)
The Decemberists (May 4th)
The Luminescent Orchestrii (May 22nd -- they wound up taking their old fiddle player back instead of choosing a new one, but they sent me the nicest damn email: "We REALLY enjoyed meeting you and playing with you. You have a wonderful spirit as a musician and we love all the crazy music and instruments you're into. You really blew Sxip's mind with those recordings you played, and that's not so easy to do!" And they may be able to hook me up with a classical music DJing gig, which would be all kinds of awesome.)
La Clemenza di Tito Got tickets for tonight! Yeeeeehaw!!!
Shockheaded Peter (I've even got a discount thingie somewhere. Gotta dig that up.)
Spamalot (this one can wait a while, but I wanna see it while it's still the original cast)

Phoo. How's it all gonna work? I dunno. Embarrassment of ruddy riches, this city. :`D _
