Ha-ho! While I was showering DM this morning, I got a BRILLIANT idea. See, I wanna get to England, right? But it's impossible to get a work visa when you're young, dumb, and unskilled in any honest trade. But these last six months or so, I've picked up a few useful things -- I can wash, shave, change, dress, transfer, cook for, and clean for anyone you'd care to name. And I can type 93 words a minute. And I'm a grammar fiend. Add up these disparate functions and what do you get? Someone eminently suited to serve a person in need of both a personal care attendant and a secretary. Now, surely there must be a good number of such people out there, eh? And I'm sure they'd be very particular about who they hire to perform such delicate tasks as seeing to their hygiene and proofreading their galleys. So particular, in fact, that if they found someone they thought might be upstanding and genial and punctilious enough they might be willing to take them from across the sea, finagle a work visa (it must be something similar to hiring a nanny, say, for your kids; I'm sure there's some rule in the home office that says you can employ anyone you want as long as you register 'em properly et cetera et cetera), give them room and board and a pittance, a peanuty pittance, for a salary... see? See? Ain't it stupendous? Now I just gotta find the person and convince 'em of my own solicitous competence. I'm sure it can be done. _

T.I.A.I.L.W.: Miss Hetty King. (actually, I've been I.L.W. Miss Nan King ever since I read that swickin' book, but I've held off on announcing it 'cause I can't seem to help myself blithering on about it every couple blog entries, and I've already been I.L.W. her author, which should subsume her anyway, right? And and and... ok, forgive me. There's a couple reasons why I'm hung up on the old fashioned opera/panto/music hall drag acts. One is obviously that I'm an anachronism fetishist. But leave that aside. It can't be helped. The other simple reason is that the costumes back then were all rich and fine, and the ones now are usually so... preppy. Just bland and lame. Y'know? But the third reason is the freaking facial fuzz. I don't like beards or moustaches on a man, and I don't like 'em on a male impersonator neither. Except in The Rake's Progress, no macho mezzo is gonna be wearing whiskers. And it's the same with those old classic dames -- the clean-shaven look wins out. I know why drag kings wear crepe goatees; it's 'cause it's easier to pass that way. It distracts the audience. But if you can pull off a ripe-suited dandy solely by means of binder and bearing, that's how you prove that you're just damn good.) _

AAAARRRRGH! I've been playing Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars (incidentally, what sort of formatting's called for when you're talking about games? Quotes? Italics? Nuttin' at all? Is there even a standard for it?), which is an old PC adventure game ported to the GBA, for about two weeks or so. It's a good game. But today I accidentally did that old tragic thing where you save (and you're only allowed to save into one slot) a second before you die, without any recourse at all -- so I had to restart the game from the beginning. It only took an hour or two, since the majority of the game is taken up by dialogue which (mercifully) can be skipped by spastically pressing the a button. So I got back to the point where I was before and continued on my merry way. Then just now I discovered that, by going to Spain before going to Syria, I've completely screwed myself over and have to begin from the very beginning AGAIN. Apparently this is only a bug in the GBA version, too. Bloody maddening. If it weren't so charming and good-lookin' (the music stinks, but I like to listen to my own music or stories while playing video games anyway, so it's just as well), I'd give it up for good. Criminy. Well, more frantic button-pressing for me. _

The title of my blog is so long that it makes bltadv look ugly. I feel guilty. Maybe it could be changed to, um, I dunno... just "Mock Turtle Soup"? That's a bit shorter. _

Aw, hell. Maybe it's a little late, but in the spirit of the thing: The Publishing Triangle's Top 100 Queer Books. I've only read 16 of these (shame!), but it looks to be a pretty decent list, from what I can tell. _

I just ordered Shakestation, the Super Madrigal Brothers' Renaissance Video Game album. Thanks to Remi for finding it way back when! I remembered about it a couple days ago, then just now looked to see if it was out yet, found that it was, listened to the mp3 of their "Pastime With Good Company" and snapped it up in a millisecond. {rocks out} _

Hm! On Googling "congenital invert", I found this essay from 1915, which I found to be surprisingly candid and sensible. Dunno if it's right in all its particulars, but it clearly comes from a sane and thoughtful perspective. _

"Hopsipoios". What does that mean again? And why did it come into my head? I really meant to write "Lycopersicon". I know what that means. Or "The Nortification of the Flesh". Oh, wait -- does it mean "pastry chef"? That would make sense. Never mind. _
