You know how it is, when you're trying to write your Nietzsche paper, and you need some background music, and you know that nothing will do except the chants of Hildegard von Bingen remixed to a techno beat by Scandinavians with nose rings and Superman shirts? _

Favorite SJC quotes from Usenet!

"I remember reading some statistics several years ago, saying that St.
John's College in Annapolis topped the list, with 70% of the students
having had sex at least once before leaving college."

"But she went to St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland, which has a classics-based curriculum, and while there became fascinated with medieval tapestries. Quite on her own she'd taken up weaving (WAY before it became fashionable in certain affluent circles) and, as it turns out, the best restoration of medieval tapestries in the world takes place in this one holy order in England. One thing led to another, she coverted to Roman Catholicism and took holy orders, and has been at this abbey in England ever since. For the past ten years or so, I guess, she's been in charge: they made her Mother Prioress."

"Here's a starter, literally: the first seven lines of the Iliad, which I
memorized while at St. John's College in Annapolis (Great Books) and
translated into Old English for a graduate course. Um, those seven lines,
not the whole thing."

"My family reports that Muscoe Shakleford Porter died in a hazing accident
at St. John's College in Annapolis. I wrote to the college and they have
no record of his attendance. He was born in 1855 and died on June 17,
1981. Any inside information from St.John's students."

"St. John's College in Annapolis, known as the great-books
school, is debating whether to teach computer languages.
Curiously, they're proposing to study an obscure and nearly
obsolete language -- Forth -- so as to make it clear that
they're remaining rooted in the humanities and not becoming an
engineering school."

"My ears started to burn just slightly. "I'm wearing a grey
sweatshirt that says "St. John's College, Annapolis," bluejeans
with no belt, white sox, a pair of white underpants, a wristwatch
and my wedding ring." "No bra?" "No.""

""St. John's, that's the Great Books program, isn't it? I was
interested in that, too. Of course, my father had other ideas for
me...Hey, Scully!" he exclaims, as if a great new notion has just
occurred to him. I can't help but wonder if it's only to deflect
feelings that the mention of his father has just raised. "We could
have been there...no, wait. I keep forgetting how young you are." "Only three years younger than you, Mulder.""

"In any event, I was having a hose-down relationship
w/a young red-headed lass who attended St. John's College in
Annapolis; one evening, after a particularly hot phone-sex con-
versation w/her, I stood in my grandmother's basement all a-quiver.
In throbbing anticipation of the coming (heh-heh) weekend's events,
I dropped trou and began to manually thrill my gorilla. (N.B.: In
terms of size, it's actually more like an anemic chimp; well, really
more like an above-average gibbon)"

"Du har ganske ret - jeg er på ferie, så hjernen må åbenbart køre
på lavt blus ;-) Welcome to St. John's College "afdelinger" a) Santa Fe, New Mexico b) Annapolis, Maryland Via b) kan man læse at "request for admission information" skal sendes til admissions@sjca.edu"

I also learned that Ernest Hemingway's son, Gregory, was a Scientologist, cross-dresser, and -- Johnny! _

Since I'm not able to post to SJCgroup (or get email from them, though yahoo says I'm a member, and I can read it off the website), two comments.

Mike: You actually *want* to be Aeneas?!?!? Why?!

Remi (through Patrick): Sweet! So far at storytellers here the only thing I've read is a couple stories from Chelm.

Cassie: The polity here didn't want to give us any money, and one of the members asked "can't you get contributions from your members"? I told him that so far we've had a nearly entirely different group of 8 - 15 people or so every week (maybe 3 regulars), and that milk and cookies taste a lot different when you're expected to pay for 'em. He quickly agreed. They voted me the money ($100), but I haven't picked it up yet. So far I've just been using my own. We go through about a gallon of milk a week (the vegans didn't come back this year; dunno why), and maybe 3 boxes of cookies, but we buy them from the dollar store, so they're cheap and exotic -- like chinese almond cookies, and italian wafer cookies and don quixote cookies. (or cheap and endearing generic ripoffs of brand names, like Huggy Bears and Choco-O's) _

My Pencil Won't Write No More (McKinley Morganfield)

Well I wonder, I wonder, every place I go
Yeah you know I just wonder, I wonder, every place I go
My letter's gone dead, and my pencil it won't write no more

Sometime I wonder why she put me out of doors (I don't like that one)
Yeah sometime I wonder why she put me out of doors
Well you know my letter's gone dead, and my pencil it won't write no more

Anybody ask you, why did I punch you in your nose
Yeah you know if anybody ask you, why did I punch you in your nose
Well you know my letter's gone dead, and my pencil it won't write no more

I went to buy some ink, but they don't keep it no more in the stores
Yeah you know I went to buy myself some ink, but they don't keep it no more in the stores
Well you know my letter's gone dead, and my pencil it won't write no more _

Is it unjust to judge amateur poetry by this standard?

1. If it's not in verse, I don't read it, unless it's very short
2. If it is in verse, and it's not immediately appallingly bad, I read it
3. If it's funny, I read it twice, and am very grateful. _

"—Is this still German?
Out of a German heart, this torrid screeching?
A German body, this self-laceration?
German, this priestly-affectation,
This incense-smelling lurid-preaching?
German, this plunging, halting, reeling,
This sugar-sweetish bim-bam pealing?
This nunnish-ogling, Ave-leavening,
This whole falsely ecstatic heaven over-heavening? . . .

Is this still German?
Consider! Stay! You are perplexed? . . .
That which you hear is Rome—Rome's faith without the text!"

impossible. impossible. I can't write it. I'm not writing it. I want to write it. Why aren't I writing it? Help help help help help help help help help!!! No! No! No! Make me write it. Stop time. Rewire me. Rent me a new one. Give me a topic. Make me an offer. Put that down! Don't start! Don't stop! Turn around. Make yourself useful. Write a memorandum. Let me be. Write, write, write. Think, think, think. No! No! No! I won't! I'm not. I will. Not now. I'm not tired. I'm not thinking. I'm not going to. I will. Maybe. Later. Now! No! I give up. _
