Maintaining the balance of your inner workings and the outer circumstances are crucial to life. The only problem is finding yours, the, a, one of them. I have reaccuring dreams of running away from people and hiding. I did that last night, but I wasn't dreaming. _

Last night I dreamed I got kicked out of St. John's. One of my tutors, who strangely resembled the guy who's directing _Funny Girl_, went through my old records and noticed that in my student entrance survey everyone had to fill out freshman year, for 'Person you most admire' I had put Adolf Hitler. I explained that it was all a joke, and that before I had come to St. John's I was an antagonistic punk who inflamed people for the joy of it, but after three years of St. John's I had mellowed and repented and become less vicious and foulmouthed, and anyway I had never really admired Adolf Hitler; I'd just said so to show how bad I was. He didn't believe me. He pulled a special end-of-term don rag (I had to wait in the hall while the tutors talked), and after a slim vote -- Ms. Adam and him and Mr. Franks voted for my expulsion; my other tutors against -- I was asked to leave that evening or else. The rest of the dream was me crying and Neil in his top-hat croquet outfit comforting me. _
